'New Moon' Director Chris Weitz On Prospect Of Directing 'Breaking Dawn': 'I Don't Have It In Me'

Back before the release of "New Moon," director Chris Weitz appeared to be toying with the idea of directing the fourth film in the "Twilight" franchise, "Breaking Dawn." Summit Entertainment has yet to announce whether the fourth book in Stephenie Meyer's vampire saga will be made into a movie (or two... because, well, we all know at least one is going to happen!), but in the weeks before the DVD release of "New Moon" (March 20), Chris was willing to share his opinions about the likelihood of developing the cinematic culmination to the series.

With 3-D all the rage after the optical triumph of "Avatar," we might soon see more movies, like "Breaking Dawn," taking a page out of James Cameron’s handbook. "I think that 3-D is great so long as it's not used in a gimmicky fashion and it can supply extraordinary depth to the visual experience," Chris told MTV News. "And it's great because it brings people to the theater, and filmmakers always want people to see things in the largest format possible."

Because of the comprehensive storylines and complicated plotting, however, Chris also agreed that "Breaking Dawn" should be broken up into two movies. "I think that it makes sense for it to be split into two parts, because it's quite a dense book with a lot going on," he said.

So, does he still want to take back the "Twilight" reins from "Eclipse" director David Slade? "Of course I'm interested," he said, but went on to add that he thinks another director could sink his teeth into a future project and guide the franchise to even greater heights.

"But I think I'm on record saying I have a 2-and-a-half-year-old son,” noting the grueling nature of making these films. "Because it'd be such a long shoot for 'Breaking Dawn', it kind of brings me to the edge of my physical and mental endurance," he explained. "And I just don't believe I have it in me, and I think that it's appropriate that someone else go ahead and do it."

Looks like Chris already declared his final “swan” song. To all aspiring directors out there, I believe that’s your invitation.
