Robert Pattinson Was Unsure About Twilight Role

Robert Pattinson has revealed he was unsure about taking on the role of the much-loved vampire Edward Cullen, saying he had wanted to work on his acting skills before stepping into the shoes of such a big part.

After appearing as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Pattinson said he had wanted to tackle some smaller acting parts away from the limelight.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: "At first I didn't want to do a movie like Twilight. I specifically hadn't done anything that anyone would see since Harry Potter because I wanted to teach myself how to act. I didn't want to be an idiot.

"I was going to wait for another year to do two or three more little things and then do something bigger.”

Thankfully for Twilight fans, Pattinson was encouraged by his agent to go along to the audition and try out for the part of Edward.

“Twilight came kind of randomly. It was a chance and as I didn't have a reputation at all there was nothing for me to lose.

He added: "They actually asked me to take my shirt off at the audition. I thought, 'If that's the criteria, then you've got the wrong guy'.

“I knew about the audition five months beforehand, but I didn't want to bother getting a six-pack or doing much else at all in preparation - but looking back, I might have combed my hair.”

It seems Pattinson’s reluctance to work on his body or indeed hair, which he has ironically become so renowned for, carried onto the Twilight set as the amount of make up for Edward’s vampire skin was debated.

“There was a lot of debate about the make-up I wore in the film, as at first it looked ridiculous, because I’m already quite pale with dark eyebrows. I didn’t even think of make-up when I got the part, and I wasn’t too involved in any of the decisions. I was more of a victim.”

Despite hoping to perfect his acting skills in smaller roles pre-Twilight, it seems the career-changing role of Edward Cullen has put a new spin on things with the New Moon actor launching himself into the Hollywood world. He recently worked alongside Pierce Brosnan in the April release of Remember Me and is currently working with Uma Thurman in Bel Ami.
