Creative Director of Carven Loves KStew
Henry says he thinks this kind of casual, off-the-cuff elegance has its roots in American mid-century designers like Claire McCardell: “Her sportiness and chicness for me are definitely revolutionary.” So which other frisky American women embody this aesthetic today? “Natalie Portman—so discreet and so talented. Michelle Williams. Alexa Chung—dressed for fashion, but you don’t recognize the labels. I love Kristen Stewart, her red-carpet looks, like she’d rather be home in front of a DVD. I don’t like ‘shoulders back and smile.’ Dree Hemingway and Chloë Sevigny and Beth Ditto! I love girls who are confident. Sigourney Weaver—I saw her in the Miu Miu shop in Paris; she shines! I love when someone shines.” And how does Henry’s jaunty Carven collection play into all this? “I think the American girl maybe has a more Parisian aesthetic now. Maybe the Carven French girl is in New York!”
