Zimbio Interview: Robert Pattinson
Sorry, Team Edward. Robert Pattinson has cut his hair. He does other movies in between Twilight movies and in some of them, he doesn’t play a dreamy greasy grunge vampire. But he’s still Edward Cullen in Eclipse, the third Twilight movie. Jacob (Taylor Lautner)’s fighting for Bella (Kristen Stewart)’s love. Who will she choose? If you’ve read ahead, that’s cheating.
Zimbio: You’ve got Team Edward and Team Jacob. Have you ever had to compete against another guy for a woman in real life?
Robert Pattinson: Did you say, “Have you ever slept with a woman with another guy?” I don’t know if that’s appropriate!
Zimbio: No, no, come on. This is for the kids here. Compete!
Robert Pattinson: Compete, no. I don’t. I’m not good at doing it. I just kind of leave it alone. If you are the one with the girl in the first place, I guess maybe you’re forced into fighting a little bit. I would never be in Jacob’s position, because then you just end up being the guy who broke up a couple anyway.
Zimbio: Do you and Taylor Lautner actually get along really well?
Robert Pattinson: For some reason I find it quite funny when I’m doing stuff like that with Taylor. There are a couple of scenes we have, sort of confrontational scenes. I sort of push him around a little bit and I was supposed to grab his shoulder. It wasn’t even in the script. I thought I’d really scare him and grab his shoulder and it’s going to freak him out and turn the whole scene upside down! Then I grabbed his shoulder and his shoulder was too big to actually get a grip on. So he just brushed it off and I just dropped my hand, so that was kind of embarrassing.
Zimbio: What are you excited about for the next film, Breaking Dawn?
Robert Pattinson: I haven’t read it yet. I mean, it’s weird because I’m starting it in a few months and it’s something I’m quite glad I haven’t read it yet. I didn’t intend to not read it until now, but it’s quite exciting. I have no idea. I just heard brief rumors about what happens in the story but I don’t really know what happens at all.
Zimbio: You were on the soundtrack of the first movie. Will you do more songs for the last two at least?
Robert Pattinson: I’ve always just been playing around. It was nice to be involved in the first one. I just saw Twilight on TV for the first time a few days ago.
Zimbio: Wait, you haven’t read Breaking Dawn yet and you hadn’t even seen the movie you were in?
Robert Pattinson: No, except for doing the DVD commentary. When my song came on I was just thinking that is so bizarre that I actually had a song in the movie. I’m kind of amazed Catherine [Hardwicke] did it. It really shows how none of us thought it was going to be so massive. I didn’t know anyone was going to buy the soundtrack or anything. So it’s a little more nerve wracking now. I don’t know, maybe I will.
Zimbio: Do you check out any of the Edward Cullen fan sites, and what are your favorites?
Robert Pattinson: I’m not really sure. It’s kind of incredible the information they get so quickly. Sometimes I’ll check them to see what my schedule is, especially on the weekend when I can’t get through to my agency. They know more than me. It’s strange being in Twilight because so much of the fan base is completely about being on the internet and having a community with each other. You see people turn up on sets of other movies I’ve done and take a picture. You know they just want to put it online and show it off, and you know it’s going to be up within five seconds. If they could upload it as they were taking the picture, it’d be better. It’s strange.
Zimbio: They all want to believe you and Kristen Stewart are really dating in real life. Do you understand why?
Robert Pattinson: No, not really. Well, I guess people like stories. That’s my basic conclusion. They just want everything to be about Twilight I guess. The truth is, I wish I had a few more hours of sleep today so I could think about better answers. [Laughs]
Zimbio: Well, here’s an easy one. Do you believe in a soul?
Robert Pattinson: Yeah, definitely. I can’t remember who said it, but “A soul and a heaven must exist because good people aren’t rewarded enough on Earth.” I always liked that idea, if that makes sense.
