Still, in keeping with Edwards "old school" nature, things did not progress beyond second base (arguably), and when at the fansite junket for Eclipse, Stephenie Meyer explained why that was (in the book, and subsequently in the film).
"Edward was born in 1901. And in his mind — he understands the world more clearly than we do. He hears everybody’s thoughts. But to him, this is kind of a…for him it’s a very disrespectful… And he can’t get away from the taboos of his youth. It would be wrong to take advantage of her, in his mind. And obviously, she has a completely different viewpoint. Her viewpoint of it is very modern. She knows that she is with him forever, and she doesn’t see his point. She went on to tell the sites that there was also a little bit of stalling involved in Edward's manuever, and she also talked about her perspective on the messages that some fans have gotten from the series.
