Tinsel Koey's Phoenix Hot Spots
A Canuck expat and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse actor, Tinsel Korey dishes on her favorite places to stay cool in Phoenix.
Tinsel Korey jokes that she moved to the United States just to get work back in Canada.
Since relocating to Los Angeles last year, the Toronto-born actor has been beckoned north of the border over and over for roles in many Canadian TV series, including Da Vinci’s Inquest and Rabbit Fall.
She’s best known for her brief role playing Emily Young—fiancée to Sam Uley of the Quileute wolf pack—in The Twilight Saga, which was filmed in Vancouver. Next up for Korey is Stained, a psychological thriller filmed in Saskatoon.
She’s also getting plenty of opportunity to discover her adopted country these days as she tours the nation—and the globe—putting in face time at Twilight conventions. Prior to the June 30 release of the third Twilight movie, Eclipse, Korey huddled with fans in Virginia, North Carolina, Texas and Illinois.
Of all the places she’s explored, though, Korey considers Phoenix, Arizona, her favourite spot, thanks to its epic sunsets and good vibes.
Hiking at Hayden Butte Preserve
“The sunset from ‘A’ Mountain [officially known as Hayden Butte Preserve], by Arizona State University campus, is gorgeous. It’s not that long of a hike… you don’t have to be in running shoes or
anything.”
Hang Out at Fountain Park
“Fountain Park in Fountain Hills has a massive fountain with a [64-acre] park that goes all the way around it. They light [the fountain] up, and the park is also home to many festivals.”
Eat at Sacred Hogan Navajo Frybread
“[Most of] the Navajo Nation is in Arizona, and they have the most amazing Navajo food. [At Sacred Hogan Navajo Frybread] you can get frybread and mutton—sheep meat—and it’s delicious.”
Sample Sushi at RA
“They don’t have as good sushi as Vancouver does right by the ocean, but RA in Scottsdale has these really good Viva Las Vegas spicy crab rolls.”
Check Out For McDowell Casino
“Fort McDowell Casino has a really great bingo parlour and on Saturday night it’s sort of a hot spot because it gets well-known bands in.”
Dig Alamo Saloon
“I’m a really down-to-earth—I don’t like going out to big bars. I usually go to The Alamo Saloon; it’s a low-key little place. On Saturdays, it has a band there playing, and there’s karaoke some nights.
It’s definitely for people who like the dive bar scene.”
Watch Duelling Pianos at The Big Bang Bar
“The Big Bang bar has duelling piano nights where people suggest songs and the musicians have to play them. It’s like professional piano karaoke.”
Stay at FireSky Resort & Spa
“FireSky Resort & Spa has this beautiful big fireplace going out front, and it’s kind of weird because it’s in Arizona and it’s so hot, but at night the pool area has a big luau feel to it. The restaurant is great as
well.”
