Yesterday, a report came down which stated that "[t]he Salvation Army says it refuses to distribute Harry Potterand Twilight toys collected for needy children because they're incompatible with the charity's Christian beliefs."
If you remember the Eclipse Advent calendar situationfrom a few days ago, you might not have been surprised by this - although you might have been annoyed.
Well, apparently, yesterday's report was false because another source has come along today with words directly from a spokesperson from the organiation, saying "This is not true. There must have been some miscommunication. We don’t know where that story came from . . . There is no set national policy . . . These are local decisions. But more often it’s the parents who decide what toys they receive. That’s not a decision the Salvation Army makes. We just want to put joy on the faces of children on Christmas morning."
Evidently, the story had originated with a volunteer who claims s/he was ordered not to place Harry Potter orTwilight toys in the donation bins.
Glad that was cleared up. Aren't you? Wouldn't a ban on brand-specific holiday gifts be incensing? Or would it be acceptable since Christmas is, obviously, a very Christian holiday, and some religious groups have decided these two series run counter to creed? In that case, wouldn't the Advent calendar issue from a few days back be justified? Or do you think, over all, that there is no justification for conflict between these two series and religious groups? This discussion could go on and on into interesting places
