Michael Sheen is No.1 in Wales cultural movers and shakers

1 Michael Sheen

He may be one of Hollywood’s biggest stars but Michael Sheen is topping our Power List 2011 for his work behind the cameras. At Easter he will co-direct a major stage project in his home town of Port Talbot. The acting heavyweight wanted to create an epic reworking of the traditional Passion Plays he used to enjoy while growing up. His drama, Passion, will be staged during the Easter weekend and it involves the whole community of Port Talbot. It’s the final production in the opening season from National Theatre Wales and while Sheen will also star in it, it’s the hard work he’s putting in behind the scenes for which we are really applauding him. Despite being much in demand, the proud Welshman was determined to bring something back to Wales and having his name attached to the project is certainly creating a huge buzz. In fact, the Film Agency for Wales has just announced it will be filming the production – which is made in conjunction with high-profile theatre company Wildworks and award-winning writer Owen Sheers – so that it can be taken to international audiences who are unable to travel to Wales for the occasion. This is set to be a theatrical highlight of the year.
