Over the last several years, Bryce Dallas Howard has been the go-to fill-in girl. She took over for Kirsten Dunst in 'The Village,' Nicole Kidman in Lars Von Trier's 'Manderlay,' the struggling Lindsay Lohan in 'The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond,' Claire Danes in 'Terminator: Salvation' and most recently Rachelle Lefevre in 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.' With only 12 (credited) feature films, that's a pretty big percentage of replacement fare.
But now she's gearing up to follow in her father Ron Howard's footsteps and take the driver's seat -- not by swearing off replacement roles and cinematic scraps, but by taking over creative control and making her own film, one she calls "a 'Breakfast Club' for my generation."
Showbiz411 reports that Howard has written a film called 'The Originals' with writing partner Dane Charbonneau, and though early reports suggested that dad Ron Howard would helm it, she told the site that she would be directing. The film focuses on a group of 20-somethings who are reunited in New York after learning that their childhood teacher has fallen into a coma. It's a premise that seems a whole lot more 'The Big Chill' than 'Breakfast Club,' but hey, she's the writer.
Though Howard didn't elaborate more on the plot, she did note that a part has been written for Zoe Saldana. However, there is no word on whether the 'Avatar' actress is interested.
We're hoping for a Bryce Dallas success story. It'd be nice to see her own a role (and film) that's 100 percent hers instead of having her simply replace some other actress at the last minute.
