NewsInFilm: Snow White Shuffle as Studios Set Fairy Tales

Last week, Universal pushed up the release date for its fairy tale re-imagining Snow White and the Huntsman to June 1, 2012, solidifying the movie’s summer status after locking in Thor star Chris Hemsworth as one of the titular leads alongside Kristen Stewart (as Snow White), Charlize Theron (the malevolent Queen Ravenna), and Sam Claflin (the prince).
Universal’s schedule shift put Huntsman just weeks before Relativity Media’s own, untitled take on the character directed by visionary filmmaker Tarsem Singh.  Julia Roberts is playing the queen in this version and the love story is between Lily Collins and Armie Hammer.
Not to be outdone, Relativity has fired back in this high-profile pissing contest, sliding its feature up to March 16, 2012 to fit in a similar release window as Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, the catalyst for Hollywood’s latest obsession.
But Relativity’s new date means Snow White will compete with two other movies that weekend, including Universal’s Gone in 60 Seconds-like thriller Contraband with Mark Wahlberg and Jonah Hill’s comedy revival of “21 Jump Street.”  It’s also a week after Disney’s newly retitled John Carter, which is flying under the radar now but will likely be one to watch for next March.  And, most importantly, Snow White is poised to bow a week before Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games, sure to be a smash with the same teen crowd.  Perhaps its just a temporary date until Universal backs down, but the current slot is head-scratching.
