Pattinson plays Georges Duroy, a poor young man in 19th century Paris, in the big screen adaptation of Guy de Maupassant's classic 1885 novel. Duroy finds himself amongst socialites and bigwigs in the French capital, and uses his (oddly vampiric) looks to sleep with the wives of the most influential men in Paris to move up in status and power.
Co-starring is Uma Thurman as the eldest of his conquests, along with Christina Ricci, Kristin Scott Thomas and Natalia Tena. And as you'd expect, there's a lot of nudity.
"We were really true to the book and because the guy is basically a s**t who wins everything at the end it's really difficult to market it - especially with me in it," Pattinson told Total Film this spring. "Everyone's worried that everyone's going to be thinking, 'Oh I want him to be nice, he's got to be nice to all the ladies.'"
