'The Vine' Talks To Taylor Lautner About His New Movie & 'Breaking Dawn'
From source: TheVine
Taylor Lautner was in Australia recently to promote his latest film, Abduction. We sat down with him to discuss leaving Jacob Black behind, becoming a Hollywood action superstar and, of course, those abs.
Hello! How are you?
Very good.
That’s good. I wanted to ask firstly if wondered if you were hired for this film because you put the ‘ab’ in Abduction?
[Laughs] I sure hope not!
It’s a lucky coincidence though, right?
[Laughs more, nods head] Funny coincidence, for sure.
Okay, serious business. Can you tell me a bit about the film?
Yeah, absolutely. Abduction is about a normal high school teenager, Nathan, who finds a picture of himself on a missing persons website only to discover that his entire life is a lie, his parents aren’t who he thinks they are. So for the rest of the movie he’s on the run, just trying to stay alive, while also trying to search for his true identity and just find the truth. It’s very exciting.
It is. I saw it and it was a lot of fun.
Oh you saw it?! And you enjoyed it?!
I did. Very fun.
That’s awesome. Very cool.
And I think that taking off with the girl next door is a great choice, but what would you do if you found your own picture on a missing persons website?
You know, funny you asked, because…
What, it happened to you?
[Laughs] No, it didn’t! But while I was filming the movie the biggest thing I would try and do is take a step back and ask myself that question. I would say, you know, I’m similar in age to Nathan, if I found out today that my entire life has been a lie, my parents aren’t my real parents, where would I go? What would I even do? And I could never answer the question. So that made me realise how difficult this is for this character. The emotions that he’s dealing with and the decisions that he has to make.
Is it difficult stepping away from Jacob Black?
It was different. It was weird. I got used to it, I was just able to fully dive into Nathan’s shoes.
It’s kind of a big deal since it’s your first lead role post-Twilight. What attracted you to the character of Nathan?
The character of Nathan… it’s completely different from Jacob, which is intriguing. I knew it was going to be a challenge making this movie and I’ve always loved challenges. I knew it would be physically challenging and emotional challenging, and it was. And then I just loved the story, the journey that the character goes on, and it’s surrounded by all this exciting stuff. There’s great action, it’s a mystery and there’s cool twists and turns. When I first read the script I couldn’t stop turning the pages, because I wanted to know what happened next.
There’s a lot of fighting and wrestling and fast cars in the film: what were some of your favourite scenes to shoot?
Action-wise, the opening of the movie I’m on the hood of a truck and I’m flying down the road, that was pretty extreme and a lot of fun, I really enjoyed that one. Then towards the end of the movie in the baseball stadium I slide down this giant glass owning, which I called a jumbo slide and that was pretty fun as well.
It looked mildly terrifying.
Yeah, a little scary! But it was fun, for sure.
Well Abduction is being likened to the Bourne series; do you see yourself becoming Hollywood’s next action hero?
I mean, I don’t know. That would be an honour. I think why the Bourne movies work and why Matt Damon has had the career he’s had is when he would do an action movie it wouldn’t just be an action movie. At its core, he’s playing a great character and there’s a love story and there’s all that stuff surrounded by this action. That’s what intrigued me about Abduction the most.
Because there’s romance too!
There is a nice little love story in there, for sure.
What’s next for you?
Next… the rest of the entire year I’m going to be promoting two movies back-to-back, Abduction and Breaking Dawn, that’ll take me up to the end of the year. During that time there’s a few things that I’m very excited about. I should be making my mind up pretty soon on what will be next next.
Any little secrets you want to give away at this early stage?
Not at this early stage!
OK.
But, hopefully soon. I can tell you I’m very excited.
Keep us posted then.
I will.
Thank you very much for your time today.
Absolutely! Nice meeting you.
Abduction opens in cinemas on Thursday, September 22 in Australia and September 23 in the U.S.
