Jackson In 'Teen Vogue'(scan)
Before Jackson Rathbone landed the role of vampire Jasper Hale (one of Twilight’s infamous Cullens) and became the face of the band 100 Monkeys, he was a dude who moved to Los Angeles to make his way as a musician. “I started out as a thirteen-year-old DJ, doing birthdays, quinceañeras, proms, etc cetera. I got paid 20 bucks for my first party, and my parents had to drive me,” he remembers. “After seeing the magical effect of music, I decided I had to start writing my own songs.”
This magical effect is why, on the first day of classes, we’re standing in the music room of KIPP Los Angeles prep, as teacher Tony Sauza leads the advanced band – whose members, ranging from sixth to eight graders, came in during summer vacation to rehearse – Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and the Beatles’ “Come Together.” Jackson and Mr. Suza are here as a part of Little Kids Rock, an amazing not-for-profit organization that’s committed to helping bring music enrichment to schools.
After the performance, there’s a Q&A and a surprise, Little Kids Rock has donated new instruments! For Jackson, who first picked up a guitar at fourteen when his sister abandoned her lessons, this issue is a personal one, “I was blessed to attend schools that believed in arts education,” he says, “It creates an avenue where a child may actually find something unique to themselves and to the world. I want everyone to have the same opportunities that I had.”
With the end of The Twilight saga on the horizon (Breaking Dawn – Part 1 hits theaters this month), Jackson’s pursuing a range of other projects as well: “I’m always finding something new and challenging to sink my teeth into…” (Get it? He’s a vampire!)
