Does 'Breaking Dawn' Appeal More To The 15+ Fans?
From source: BrisbaneTimes
Twilight film's efforts to break box office records threatened by restrictive classification.
The Australian government's Classification Review Board today announced it would review the classification for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1.
The film initially received an MA15+ classification with the consumer advice 'Strong Themes.'
According to the Board, the classification means that the film is deemed "not suitable for people under 15."
Crucially the MA15+ classification legally restricts who may see the film, requiring that "under 15s must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian".
The Classification Review Board will meet on Monday to consider the application to have the classification for the film altered.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 opens on Thursday and will be hoping to top its predecessors' box office success. The Twilight Saga: New Moon opened on the corresponding weekend in 2009 with the second highest opening weekend in Australian history of $16,109,479. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is the 10th highest opening film of all time with an opening weekend of $12,990,707 in July 2010.
Both films were classified M, a rating which does not legally restrict audiences, merely recommending the film for mature audiences.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn novel by Stephenie Meyer contains plot lines that were always likely to present a challenge for the film adaptation's classification, including a complicated pregnancy plot line.
