First of all, we love your coat. Is it Donna Karan?
Yes! It is. It’s one of the many perks of the job.
What it means to you to be the new face of DKNY?
I think it’s a huge compliment that they wanted me to be the face of DKNY. I’ve always been a fan of the brand, so I think it’s a really organic fit for me. The brand represents this really incredible style that is New York—and I love New York! So I was very flattered that they asked me to jump on-board.
Are you living in New York right now?
Yeah, I am. You know, I go back and forth between here and Los Angeles, but I’m doing Pan Am out here right now, so it’s a very good excuse to be here for a long time. I try to book everything I possibly can in New York so that it gives me an excuse to be out here.
Do you prefer New York to Los Angeles?
I do like having both worlds. Sometimes, I just want to jump in my car and go places myself and hide from the rain. But I think that there’s this really incredible creative energy in New York that you don’t get anywhere else. And especially because of the line of work that I’m in, it’s a really great thing. It’s inspiring to be here! I feel like everyone has their own thing going on, but everyone kind of co-exists together. It’s a really interesting city.
How much do you love the ad?
I do love it! I love it so much. They sent me a book with probably thirty images that they were talking about using to do the ads, and it was the first time I saw every image. And I just said, “Oh, my God! Yep, I’m fine with all of them. Pick whatever you want.” And you would expect nothing less, because DKNY is incredible, but it was so cool. These images were some of my favorites of the bunch, so the fact that they picked them was a very cool thing for me. I was, like, “Yes!” It is crazy to see them, though, that big right in the middle of Times Square.
Is it just crazy to see your face hanging out in the middle of Times Square?
Yes! But it’s cool because my parents are coming into town for Christmas. It’s going to be really cool for them to see them.
What are your Christmas plans this year?
Lots of cooking and eating.
Will you be doing any of the cooking?
Yeah! I’m trying to coordinate with my mom right now, picking out our favorite recipes and getting all of the food we need—and making sure we have all of the proper cooking utensils! It’s all part of hosting Christmas. Just waking up and opening presents and eating all of the food will be really fun for me. My family will be out here for a while—they’re staying through New Year’s—so I’ll be getting to spend a lot of time with them. I don’t get to see them as often as I’d like to. My brother’s actually never been to New York before, so it’s his first time coming.
How cool!
Yeah, it’s going to be so cool. We’re going to do a couple of tours together, see a bunch of things probably. There are also a bunch of little local spots that I want to take them all to, too.
What are your plans for New Year’s Eve?
I’m pretty sure I’m just going to do something really mellow with my parents. The place that they’re staying actually has a bunch of really amazing restaurants, so that makes things really easy for us.
Do you have any winter must-haves, fashion-wise?
I just got this really incredible shearling coat, and it’s reversible, which is huge since you know there isn’t a lot of closet space in New York. It’s nice to have two awesome jackets in one. So that, and I say you should get a really great cashmere sweater, because it’s great to layer over. It’s not that thick and it’ll always keep you warm. It’s really beautiful today, but it does get very cold here, doesn’t it?
It sure does. And the jacket, it’s DKNY?
Yes! I just went into the store and destroyed the place. I was, like, “Yep, I’ll take that!”

Ashley Greene gets gritty for the DKNY Jeans Spring 2012 ad campaign.
“You can’t get more New York than that,” laughed Ashley Greene, as we rode with her in a double-decker bus after the unveiling of the star’s brand-new DKNY Jeans ad in—where else?—Times Square.
The Twilight actress was named the face of the DKNY brand in October, and this billboard is the first glimpse of her Spring 2012 ad campaign, shot by Inez van Lemsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.
“I did not know it was going to be that big,” she told FashionEtc of the billboard. “It’s humongous! I don’t think in my wildest dreams I would have thought I’d be a part of something like that. It’s very exciting.”
Greene connected with the brand after attending a Donna Karan fashion show and meeting the namesake designer post-catwalk.
Soon, Karan was offering to custom-make a gown for Greene to wear at the Met Gala.
“We get along, and we stand for the same thing,” she told us of Karan. “[We both have] a very positive message to women of empowerment.”
And the clothes aren’t too shabby, either. “It’s the greatest thing in the world to be able to have these gowns custom designed for yu,” she said.
“They’ll send maybe 20 sketches, and we can kind of mix and match if we want to and go from there. It’s so fun to be able to dip your toes into something like that and be a part of the creative process.”
Don’t hold your breath for the Ashley Greene clothing line, though—while she loves working with the DKNY team (and who wouldn’t?), she told FashionEtc her schedule’s a little packed at the moment for a project like that.
You may have heard of a little thing called Breaking Dawn?

Ashley Greene is happy that she was able to play a vampire instead of a werewolf in the “Twilight” movies. When werewolves morph from human to canine, “you ruin all your clothes and, as a fashion lady, I wouldn’t be happy with that.”
In addition to the jeans that she wears in one of the two Times Square billboards, Greene also said she loves the “movement” of DKNY dresses that she wears in other shots, because they’re so “easy, carefree and beautiful.”
Greene, who is also an ambassador for Mark cosmetics, said she’s happy that the two brands she works with are so complementary. “They pair together nicely,” she said. “They reach the same demographic — young and carefree. And they both provide a positive message of empowerment for women.”
Greene herself feels empowered these days by the sheer volume of work she’s doing. Next up is a guest-starring stint on the ABC series “Pan Am,” where she plays Amanda, the old flame of Ted, one of the stars. “They reconnect and it’s like a romantic triangle,” she said, noting that she particularly enjoyed playing a character from the Sixties.
For next year, she has several film projects already in the can, including “Butter,” to be released March 16; “The Apparition,” due out Aug. 24, and “Olivia Twisted,” scheduled for a 2013 release. And, of course, there’s the final installment of the “Twilight” franchise, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2,” being released Nov. 16. “I’ll be doing a lot of press next year,” she said.
“I go crazy if I’m not working all the time,” she said. “I can vacation for around seven days and that’s it. It’s just unnatural for me to sit around.”
So is she sad that the “Twilight” series has come to an end? “We’re in a state of denial about it,” she said. “We’re still enjoying everything about the most recent release. It’s great that the movie was so well received and the fan base is still so passionate. But next year, when the final film is released, then it’ll be like, ‘Whoa, it’s really over.’ But it’s happening in increments, so that makes it easier.”
Even so, Greene will be forever grateful for the opportunity that the “Twilight” films have given her. “It’s been a great jumping pad for us,” she said. “It’s really changed our lives. So it’ll be hard, but I’m keeping a very positive outlook about it. I’ve been captured on film forever, and the relationships that I developed with [my co-stars] are not going anywhere.”
The full DKNY advertising campaign featuring Greene will roll out beginning in early January.
