Where do we find the characters in this installment?
WG: “It’s great actually because they’re in the most adult state of their life so far and as a couple. Marriage, childbirth, hopefully. And that’s what’s been so exciting about the movie is watching Kristen and Rob going through something that they haven’t yet gone through in their own lives.
“Up until now they’ve been playing high school characters that they can relate to but this is when they have to embark on a journey that they haven’t taken themselves.”
How was it working with the cast?
WG: “It’s a pleasure, really. We’re honoured to have such good actors and the best people to fit the roles. In particular Rob, Kristen and Taylor have been so dedicated to this series, they’ve been unrelenting in their pursuit of getting it right. Especially Kristen. I’m daily in awe of that she brings to Bella.”
This is the penultimate film. Were you sad when shooting came to an end?
W: “You know what we’re actually so excited. There’s a sense of real accomplishment that we all felt when we completed the fifth film and we made them all in three and half years. I can’t think of another series where there were five films in that space of time. And when we finished we looked at each other and were like, wow we did it, let’s hope everyone enjoys them!”
Next up was a newcomer to the franchise, director Bill Condon.
What is it about Twilight that keeps people coming back again and again?
BC: “I think partly it’s that there’s a woman at the centre of it and that’s rare these days. It’s about all the important parts of a woman’s life, especially in this one. Bella has been this 18-year-old for so long but now she gets married, she goes on her honeymoon, she gets married, she gives birth.
“It gets to be very dark too, sort of like a horror movie towards the end. It’s intense because what’s happening is so intense.”
Was it your idea to have Taylor rip his shirt off in the first ten seconds?
BC: “I say get it over with! Give everyone what they want and that’s it!”
And then there was K-Stew, bringing serious glamour to the red carpet in a floor length, black sequined and lace Roberto Cavalli gown. The picture just don’t do her justice. We were actually surprised how pretty she is in the flesh – alabaster skin and clear blue eyes.
As fans of FTRC know we love to pay attention to what actors are wearing on the red carpet and this is definitely the best we’ve ever seen her look. In typical K-Stew fashion as soon as the photocall wrapped she was out of her black peep toes heels and into a pair of Nike trainers.
When the franchise first started we were pretty underwhelmed by the now 21-year-old actress in interviews. She seemed particularly awkward and inarticulate but in the last couple of year she’s really come into her own.
Watching her work the red carpet you really got the sense that she was taking every question pretty seriously. And so it was when we spoke with her (note the scrunched brow as she thinks. So Kristen).
What keeps audiences coming back?
KS: “I’m not sure to be honest. It’s a particular type of person who takes Bella to heart and identifies with her, particular but not rare. She’s fundamentally female. She’s got this faith in her own gut that I think girls can… maybe this isn’t it, but this is why I love it, she’s just goes for it and she doesn’t really know why yet.
“Sometimes when you have such a strong emotion that you haven’t articulated yet you can’t not trust it just because you don’t know where it’s coming from and in this movie she gets everything she wants. It all makes sense suddenly and it all clicks. A lesser person wouldn’t have had the strength to stay.
“So it’s a long enduring, hard thing that only someone who had the guts could take and I think that most girls like to think that’s who they are.”
How was it working with Robert and Taylor for the fourth time?
KS: “Great. It’s funny whenever anyone asks me what I’ll miss about the series it’s working with those guys. Hopefully I get to do it again sometime.”
And with that she was whisked away.
Up next Taylor Lautner with his megawatt smile and his take on the appeal of Twilight.
TL: “I really have no idea. I don’t quite understand it. I mean, I do: I think it all starts with the books and the characters that Stephanie Meyer created. Fans are in love with those characters and we’re very fortunate to be in this position.”
What’s the rivalry like between Edward and Jacob in Breaking Dawn Part I?
TL: “It’s interesting. We start out as rivals but the two of them kind of have to put their differences aside and sort of join forces and actually act like friends for the one common goal which is to protect Bella.”
What are you giving fans in this film?
TL: “This one was an emotional rollercoaster. He starts off as the same Jacob we’ve always known and he ends it as a man so I think it’ll be very interesting for the fans to see that transition.”
And his message for the fans?
TL: “Thank you so much for everything and I can’t wait for you guys to see Breaking Dawn.”
After the jump Jamie Campbell Bower recognises us and of course we finally have a (bumbling) word with Robert Pattinson.
Next up with Jamie Campbell Bower who plays Caius in Twilight. We were pretty surprised when we saw him heading towards us with a broad smile saying: “I see you on the cinema, doing your thing with those M&Ms.”
Campbell Bower on the appeal of Twilight: “I suppose people can relate to it. I suppose writer who can stand the test of time and connect with a mass audience is obviously doing something right. And it’s a love story. Underneath it all is that passion and that desire. It’s practically Shakespearean.”
JCB on the cast and Condon: “It’s great you know. There are 72 named cast members in the first and second films and we shot them at the same time in a small town in Louisiana. We were all holed up there and you can’t help but form a bond with those people because you do have a shared experience.”
JCB on the horror elements to the new film: “It’s very dark. It’s very theatrical. Bill Condon is amazing. I love him. There’s something quite magical to it and it’s quite fun as well and it should be – it’s the send off. It’s not your classic Hammer horror, blod everywhere but it’s quite scary. I get scared very easily.
You’re a bit of a wussy.
“Yeah I am a bit of a pussy!”
He was a quite charming.
Next up Twilight newbie MyAnna Buring who plays one of the creepy Cullen cousins at the wedding.
On the films appeal: “It’s a story about finding true and loyal love and everyone thinks that’s a great idea. I remember when I read the books that’s what captured my imagination.”
On working with the cast: “It was fantastic. They were all absolutely lovely. I think out of all of them I had a soft spot for Michael Sheen who is acting royalty here in the UK to have scenes with him and Billy Burk and Sarah? They’re such incredible actors whose work I’ve looked up to for years.
“And of course I’m very enamoured with those actors who have brought those incredible characters that Stephanie Meyer has created.”
Finally Robert Pattinson. We confess that we don’t find him remotely swoony but he was entertaining. If only for the fact that he seemed so distracted by the furore on the red carpet, he was quite unable to get a snappy soundbite out. Can’t say our camera man/editor was best pleased!
In any case – RP on the wedding: “I proposed to Bella so many times we had to get married at some point otherwise it wouldn’t make any sense. Doing the birth scene was incredibly different. It’s amazing that it’s part of the series. It’s so graphic, hopefully people will enjoy it.”
Coherent enough, but then it all went a bit wrong (and it was such an easy question too!)
RP on the appeal of Twilight:
“I think it’s just these characters. Stephanie Meyer has created these characters that are somehow attach onto the vein of humanity… what the f— am I talking about!? Jesus Christ! People just love the books and she’s tapped into some craziness in girls that just makes them go crazy!
How about the rivalry between Jacob and Edward? “There’s actually less rivalry because we both want the same thing – we want to abort the foetus!”
Lovely!
How does it feel that everyone is talking about your sex life on screen?
“It’s been like that my whole life! Haha! No not at all! It’s kind of weird. You have to blank out the fact that everyone is thinking about it – it’s too much pressure! You can’t perform! It wasn’t too bad, it was kind of easy, it was a really sweet, nice scene and hopefully people will like it.”
RP on the director: “He’s really funny and very good-natured. We were working for 8 months, 6 days a week for 15 hours a day and people go crazy especially when you have 80 actors all with contacts lenses and a myriad of complaints and for your director to still stay sane and nice to everyone it’s kind of great.”
