Robert Pattinson/BEL AMI at Berlin Film Festival?
Will the Robert Pattinson movie Bel Ami be screened at the Berlin Film Festival? Rumor has it that it will. Although that is certainly a possibility, the issue may turn out to be a little complicated. [Watch Bel Ami trailer.]
Larry Richman has written a long and very detailed article on the likelihood — or not — of Bel Ami having its "official" World Premiere in Berlin, whether in competition or in one of the various sidebars. The word "official" is between quotes because Bel Ami has been shown at special screenings (for women only) in various Belgian cities in early January.
"All sections of the Berlin Film Festival have in their requirements, 'World Premieres are given priority,'" Richman explains. "Normally, the definition of 'World Premiere' would not allow for a previous theatrical run. … Then again, if the film was accepted into Berlin, the filmmakers were likely notified of that prior to the decision to have some screenings in Belgium. So they may have asked Berlin if they could do it."
Richman makes a good case that the key here is whether or not the Belgian screenings of Bel Ami could be considered something other than "public" showings of the film. If the answer is Yes, then Bel Ami could indeed have its "World Premiere" at the Berlinale.
One film that has been shown elsewhere (the United States and Bosnia Herzegovina) but that will be screened in Berlin (not as a World Premiere) is Angelina Jolie's In the Land of Blood and Honey, which is up for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
Next week, the Berlin Film Festival will announce further titles included in its 2012 line-up. The festival runs February 9-19.
Bel Ami was directed by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, and adapted by Rachel Bennette from Guy de Maupassant's classic novel. In addition to Robert Pattinson as the ambitious, sexually alluring ex-soldier Georges Duroy, the period drama also features Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman, Colm Meaney, Natalie Tena, Holliday Grainger, Pip Torrens, James Lance, and Todd Peterson. Bel Ami is scheduled to open on March 2 in the UK and June 27 in France.
Pattinson has two other films coming out in 2012: David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis and Bill Condon's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, the last installment in the Twilight movies. Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner co-star in Breaking Dawn 2.
