Kristen Stewart Confirms Big-Name Directors Approached For 'Breaking Dawn'

Gus Van Sant, Sofia Coppola and Bill Condon are in the running for 'Twilight' film.

Twilight" stars Robert Pattinson and Peter Facinelli have told MTV News that their ideal director for "Breaking Dawn," the still-announced adaptation of the final volume in the vampire series, would be two-time Oscar-nominated director Gus Van Sant. An Entertainment Weekly report on Tuesday suggested that Van Sant ("Milk") is in fact one of three high-profile directors who have been approached to helm the film, along with Sofia Coppola ("Lost in Translation") and Bill Condon ("Dreamgirls").



Now MTV News has received exclusive confirmation about the development from Kristen Stewart herself. "I'm glad that's out and about," she said about the outreach to the directors. "I didn't know that was something that people knew."

EW had previously confirmed the anonymous report with Van Sant's rep but hadn't yet received word from Coppola's or Condon's spokespeople. Summit Entertainment declined to comment on the report.

While any directorial decision will reportedly have to wait until Melissa Rosenberg hands in a detailed draft for the script — and there is still no word about if "Breaking Dawn" will be split into two separate films — Stewart professed her excitement about any of the three directors helming the movie.

"I think it's awesome," she said. "I think it's so cool that they're reaching. I think any one of those people would be great."

Previously, Pattinson told us that Van Sant would be the perfect pick because of the setting and the content of many of his previous films — which include "Good Will Hunting," "My Own Private Idaho" and "Elephant."

"He shoots everything in Portland. He's good at making it look beautiful," Pattinson said, adding of "Breaking Dawn," "It's all about teenage love and obsessions. I think Gus Van Sant would be great."

The path to becoming a filmmaker is one that can take many routes, some more direct than others. For director Allen Coulter it was by directing television and lots of it, including popular HBO shows "The Sopranos" and "Sex and the City," before finally making his first feature in 2006, the moody murder mystery Hollywoodland, based on the death of actor George Reeves.

Coulter's second feature film is Remember Me, a romantic drama set in New York City starring Twilight's Robert Pattinson and Emilie de Ravin ("Lost") as Tyler and Ally, two young people from different worlds who meet under odd circumstances. Both have had great losses in their lives and both are dealing with daddy issues, Tyler with his rich selfish businessman father played by Pierce Brosnan and Ally with her overprotective police detective father, played by Chris Cooper, but somehow they're able to find a middle ground and fall in love.

It’s Official: Chris Weitz not directing “Breaking Dawn”

For months on end there has been speculation about “Breaking Dawn,” and who would direct the final chapter of the saga.

Gossip Cop has received official confirmation from Chris Weitz’s rep that he will not be directing the film(s).

Fans had hoped for some time Weitz, who directed “New Moon” (and “The Golden Compass” and “About A Boy” before that), would helm “Breaking Dawn,” but it’s a no go.

Weitz is next slated to direct a personal project about an undocumented Mexican laborer that he himself is partially funding. That film begins next month.

So loved was Weitz there was even a rumor – albeit false – that stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner had written a joint endorsement, urging Summit Entertainment to lock down the director for the final installment.

Ultimately, it was Weitz’s decision.

As Gossip Cop reported last month, though officially no decision has been made about whether to split “Breaking Dawn” into two films, a well-place source said dividing the final book into two movies is “the direction that it’s going in.”
