Vanity Fair "Look At Pan Am" Last night's episode

imagebam.com imagebam.com

A lot has happened during Pan Am’s two-week hiatus. First, Twilight darling Ashley Greene agreed to distract viewers from the show’s weak storylines by appearing as a three-episode guest star. Then Karine Vanasse (Colette) went and tweeted that the entire series had been discontinued, promptly raining on the parades of vampire lovers and 60s-era-airline fanatics alike.

In a swift P.R. sweep, ABC was quick to deny that the prime-timers’ days are numbered. Nevertheless, things are not looking good for our bumbling crew: ratings are down while meandering plot lines are still alive and kicking. But if we learned anything from last week’s epic Haiti episode, it’s that the show must go on! And last night it went on and on and on.

We begin with, Kate the spy. She’s still bitter that her boss kidnapped her Yugoslavian boyfriend and sent him back home for communism-fighting purposes. She’s so bitter, in fact, that she’s decided to get out of the espionage business altogether. But the boss won’t let her. (Apparently, there’s a short supply of sensational redheads who can deliver books and cigarettes to men in ugly turtlenecks.) After he threatens to fire her from Pan Am, she reluctantly agrees to an assignment across the pond.

Meanwhile Maggie helps her Beatnik friend Sam wiggle onto their flight to England. (It is in his highest interest to attend the World Atomic Symposium, or, in his words, the event hosting “the biggest death merchants on the planet.”) On the flight, Sam decides to give the Full Beatnik Treatment to charming yet atomically inclined congressman Christopher Rollins. Maggie catches wind of this and nips his speech in the bud to avoid getting herself into trouble—though naturally she too is anti-world annihilation. When she apologizes to the congressman, he says she has a cute blue hat, indicating that they will sleep together by the end of the episode. (She will also set fire to one of his speeches and consequently almost burn down an entire hotel building, but that’s beside the point.) How far we’ve come since the Great Hook-up Draught of October.

Speaking of hook-ups, Dean’s keen on charming Colette after their passionate embrace on a crumbling tarmac in Haiti. His plan of attack? Show up outside her apartment in his best country-boy outfit and offer her a flying lesson on his family farm. What’s Dean’s preferred casualwear, you ask? Denim on denim on denim! So much denim that Colette just has to do him in a barn. Yes, that happens. But not before Colette meets his solemn country parents, who wonder aloud what happened to the former Pan Am stewardess and No. 1 D-man squeeze Bridget Pearce. Despite his parents’ horrible manners, Dean manages to reassure Colette that she’s the only one for him, after which they perform the aforementioned roll in the hay.

Back in England, Ted’s parents have arranged a date with an old family friend, Amanda (Greene), about whom he has painful childhood memories. He asks Laura to pretend to be his jealous girlfriend so he can end the night early, but then hits it off with Amanda and brings her back to his hotel room. Laura—who never really seemed to dig Ted before—realizes what she’s been missing. Let’s hope this leads to a good old-fashioned hair-pulling match next time.

The episode closes with Kate. The horribly dressed British spy to whom she was supposed to deliver a pack of cigarettes asks her for help with a last-minute mission. It’s not clear how or why, but if Kate can pull this one off, she will also restore Bridget’s compromised identity. The whole thing involves many an ugly tweed blazer and ends with a scuffle between her British boss and a jewelry salesman/enemy/communist (?). Between punches, someone’s gun falls down the stairwell near Kate. She picks it up and aims. Then: bang! Closing credits.

A doozey of a plot-pusher, that episode nine. It made us miss Don Draper quite a bit. He, a sophisticated gentleman, does not wear three-piece denim suits or Steve Jobs–style turtlenecks. Let’s look at a few moments in the episode and ask: What Would Don Do?

Sam, the bearded Beatnik meant to represent liberal thought in the 60s, yells at a congressman in first class for supporting nuclear development.

WWDD? Don is not one to tolerate backtalk. Not from Betty, not from Peggy, not even from his late secretary Ida Blankenship. He would most definitely not tolerate a passionate tirade from some unhygienic artist without a job. He’d coolly press the “help” button, then ask a stewardess to do something about the annoying buzzing in his ear.

On Pan Am: The congressman patiently listens, and even implores Ted not to silence Sam when he steps in to stop the confrontation. Is it just us, or is it suspiciously inconsistent that the same guy who’s pro-intimidating-world-leaders-with-nuclear-weapons is also a strong believer in free speech on a seven-hour flight?

A grumpy old Pan Am pilot replaces Dean for the flight to London, and won't shut up about his time in the war.

WWDD? Don has a way about making his older, more experienced superiors feel silly and sentimental for chatting about wars they’ve fought in. He’d most likely nod and nurse a Manhattan during the stories. Then he’d adopt a cryptic expression and express his understanding. Afterward, he’d challenge the aforementioned pilot to an arm wrestle.

On Pan Am: Like the spineless sidekick he is, Dean sits back and allows the old guy to relive his glory years. He also doesn’t say anything when the geezer spanks Laura on her way out of the cockpit. Remind us: Why does she have a crush on him?

While buying apples on a farm, Dean springs surprise lunch plans with his parents on Colette.

WWDD? Don is often averse to meeting/interacting with/and staying loyal to family. But what he hates more are surprises. He’d most likely find a way to delay lunch—perhaps suggesting a “nap” in a nearby barn and, well, you know what happens next . . .

On Pan Am: Colette doesn’t seem incredibly excited about meeting Dean’s parents, especially since she and Dean had their first kiss only an episode ago. Nevertheless, she is flattered and mildly excited for lunch. Since she sang the German national anthem at a fancy dinner party, there is nowhere to go at social gatherings but up.

(Caps) Great! Rob Interview with Capricho (Brazil)

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

Robert Pattinson arrived at the luxurious Four Seasons hotel, in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, very much like himself. Beard, jeans, white shirt and hat turned to the back. Before we started the interview, he passed by me carrying a dog bed and left it in a room, at the end of the hall, where Bear was. Yes, Rob’s dog always joins him in his business commitments, ever since his owner adopted him, during Breaking Dawn filming.
The English actor came back laughing and not even caring that I was there seeing everything. Rob is exactly like that: a simple guy that makes sure to always be himself. In 4 years of the Twilight saga, the most famous actor in Hollywood, never let success go up to his head. He was never involved in scandals and doesn't like talking about his personal life - even his relationship with Kristen almost goes unnoticed. Rob's secret? To have his family and his "few true friends" always around him. In this exclusive interview to CAPRICHO, Robert Pattinson also talked about what he felt while shooting 'Breaking Dawn': he said he only got scared during the wedding scene when saw Kristen walking dawn the aisle towards him, and that he was terrified to hold a real baby. Ah! Notice the loving way he talks about his girlfriend.

It was so cool to see you talking Portuguese...
I wonder what the fans thought of me. They think I did it all wrong.. Honestly, I was just repeating the words people were saying to me. (laughs)

What did you feel when you saw Kristen wearing the wedding dress?
She looked amazing. To me, it was a very easy scene. I didn't have to hide, like Kristen, because of the dress. She was so stressed, sitting inside the house, waiting for the paparazzi helicopters to leave. I was great, until I saw her walking in my direction. When I saw her terrified look, I realized that it was my scene too, that I was going to have to do something. (laughs) It was my time to freak out. But it was a beautiful scene.

And the sex scene? Was it difficult to shoot?
No. That was easy! (laughs). The hardest thing was that, in normal movies, when you're doing a sex scene, people don't pressure you a lot because the director doesn't want to intervene and suggest how he would do that. (laughs) But in Breaking Dawn, it was different, there was too much expectation. How to make all the people, that were waiting for that moment, happy?

Do you think you did well?
I think all the merits go to the director, Bill Condon. Because there weren't many ways to film a nice sex scene with a PG-13 rating. You can't show too much. It can't be "complete", with everyone naked. (laughs)

Was there anything that made your life easier during that time?
Actually, nothing made things less weird. (laughs) There were three men to break the bed. I was trying to do a sex scene and there was huge guy laying on the floor, looking at me and telling me what to do.

How was your attitude torwards Kristen
I was worried about protecting her because, you know, in that situation, everything is more complicated. But in the end, she was more comfortable with her body than I was with mine. (laughs)

Were you embarrassed to be shirtless
(Laughs) I was trying to keep the sheets covering us during the breaks between scenes. But it was more because of me than Kristen (laughs). Have to be judge by how I look like is terrifying. -- I avoided that the whole saga. --

Did you work out to film those scenes
Yes. But, as soon as I filmed them and didn't need to be shirtless, I stopped working out. (laughs)

The birth scene is so dramatic. How was to shoot that?
I read the script and didn't understand it. It didn't look like a Twilight scene. To see Bella almost dead and have to do a c-section with my mouth. I thought: "How are they going to film that?"

And Kristen? She was okay with it?
She's very commited to the role and was really involved in Bella's story. She was so intense in the scene, I don't know, I think it brought out an emotion in me. For the first time during the saga I was nervous. There was no other way to shoot that. It's a scary scene.

Taylor Lautner said Kristen looked really sexy as a vampire. True?
(Laughs)Of course, a sexy goddess. She looked amazing. It was funny because Bella is that girl that is always tripping on things, and then, she turns into this elegant woman, like a vampire queen. Kristen had the best twist in the plot!

Did the movie make you think what kind of father would you be?
I never really thought about that, but during the second part of the movie, we were filming with 2-3 weeks old babies, and I was terrified. You have no idea how small they are. (laughs). I was scared to death to break them.

Do you want to be a young dad?
I think that would be nice, because I don't have a lot of friends. (laughs) Sorry, I don't have a younger brother, my idea about kids is kind of immature. (laughs)

How do you define love?
Wow. (laughs) I think it's to be with someone and let that person to be herself. Each one has to live their own lives, but with the support of the other person. And you need to be able to do what you want. This is one of the definitions of a couple in love, because love is about so many other things.

Have Kris, Tay and you really become friends?
We went through this moment in our careers together It's nice to be around people that were going through the same thing. It's easier to keep your ego and sanity under control. Like, any of us would judge the other if he/she changed. And the fact that we are still friends, after five movies, is amazing. We were lucky.

How would you describe Kristen?
She's great. Ok, that was awful (laughs) She's ambitious.I like that obsessive determination she has to be herself. She's amazing. She takes the things she says too seriously, kind of like the opposite of me. (laughs)

What have you learned in these four years in Twilight
The importance to keep my feet on the ground. Ever since I became an actor, I saw people who with just a little fame, lost it. But the majority of the people I’ve worked with in Twilight didn’t, just like the actors in Harry Potter. Having family and real friends around me helped me a lot. That makes the difference in life.

Four years ago, you were shocked with fame. What changed?
Everything. It’s strange being the subject all the time. You feel powerful and think that you can do anything you want. You want to remember your original dreams because it all gets confusing and distorted when you have a million people telling you what to do. You feel that you are being judged, no matter what you do. I still believe in what I used to believe

Have you given up on being a musician?
I stopped doing gigs because who goes to see me wants to see the famous person. It’s nice to play to people that just want to have fun and don't care about who I am.

But do you still make music?
Yes. I’ve made millions of songs. (laughs) I play the guitar, piano and cello.

You play paino in 'Breaking Dawn - Part 2', right?
I teach Renesmee how to play the piano. It's nice. I shot the scene with a 4 year old girl that played better than me. (laughs)

At 25, what do you want from life?
I don’t know, to become an adult? I still feel like I’m 12. I hope to grow up. (laughs)

Filming For Pawn HAS started ! In West Hartford

imagebam.com

Movies are not usually shot in West Hartford, but on Sunday a film crew and a few celebrities were on South Main Street for the first day of filming for the movie "Pawn."

"I got a live one," Marnie Paulus said as she showed her husband a blurry picture of actor Michael Chiklis

The Paulus family came to West Hartford Center Sunday to see the film crew and hopefully to spot some stars. Nearby, a group of seventh-grade girls were there for one specific reason. They said they hoped to see actress Nikki Reed, who appeared in the "Twilight" movies, and they pledged to watch for her all night.

Other onlookers did not realize that South Main Street had become a film set.

Many drivers cruising north on South Main Street stared at the set as they went by. Some even hit their brakes and rolled down their windows to ask pedestrians or police officers what was going on.

Several people strolling through Blue Black Square and West Hartford Center were also not aware of the filming.

"We thought there was a real crime scene," said Jerry Aronson of Rocky Hill, who was visiting the Noah Webster Library when he saw several police cars and a large crowd.

The plot of "Pawn," according to the online site imdb.com, is about a petty robbery that spirals into a hostage situation after gunmen hold up a diner that's a front for the mob. The website said the movie is set to open in 2013, and segments are being filmed at and in front of the former Friendly's restaurant on South Main Street. The restaurant has been redecorated as a diner for the movie.

In addition to Chiklis and Reed, the cast includes other well-known names, such as Forest Whitaker, Stephen Lang and Ray Liotta.

Earning spots as extras in the movie are members of the West Hartford police SWAT team. The officers have no lines in the movie, and are not being paid by either the town or the film company, said Sgt. Chris Chappell, who is an extra. The officers play a SWAT team in the movie, he said.

Six West Hartford police cruisers will also be featured, but the West Hartford name has been covered up for the movie. The film company is paying the town to use the vehicles, Chappell said.

Chappell said he has never appeared in a movie and said that it is a neat opportunity. "It's not as easy as it looks," he said of filming.

Through Wednesday, the southbound lane of South Main Street, between Farmington Avenue and Memorial Road, will be closed between 4:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. because of filming. The northbound lane of South Main Street will remain open, but will occasionally be shut down for short periods of filming.

The film company will also be using 28 on-street parking spaces on the east side of South Main Street. Those spaces will be used from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

After Wednesday, most of the filming will take place inside the old Friendly's building. The restaurant was one of 63 Friendly's restaurants nationwide to close in October as the chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Filming is expected to be complete by Dec. 22.
