Two years ago he did a forgotten supporting role in the Harry Potter movies. Today, Robert Pattinson, is the vampire Edward in the billion mega sucess Twilight, and the worlds most longed for man. Maria Lindholm from swedish Elle got to meet him in Cannes last summer.
I'm going to meet Robert Pattinson at a restaurant along the promenade in Cannes. The film company don't reveal the time or location until one day ahead. But somewhere the information leaks out, gossip bloggers twitter about it and just hours before the worlds, at the moment, hottest and most chased guy is about to come in, fans and paparazzis has gathered. Guard protects every corner of the restaurant. Groups with girls sneak along the promenade. Some extra bold ones takes the chance and jumps into the water from the adjacent beach and swims around. A guard stops them, but they stay in the sand trying to zoom in on the actor inside the restaurant with their cameras.They can not possibly get a look of Rob who are sunk in an egg-shaped plastic chair. He's here to talk about New Moon, the sequel to the hit film Twilight that unexpectedly cashed in four billion (sek?), and the other one out of four movies based on Stephenie Meyers colossal best-seller series of books.
I've read the book, seen the movie and taken a voluntary deep dive into the worshiping youtube clips, gossip- and fansites about "Rpattz" and Twilight. But the unexpectedly long Robert Pattinson seems both more puppy like, nicer and more shy than you might think.
- All the screaming is just crazy, Robert says and aims at all fans. They would never scream/cry for one and one, there is a peer pressure.
But apart from fan behavior- it's impossible to stop looking at him. He´s incredibly photogenic. The facial expressions shift fast, childish and embarrassed when he laughs loudly and looks down (which he does alot) to a clownlike expression with staring eyes and raised eyebrows and then he's drawing his hand through his hair and shoots off an oblique look worthy of his new super sexy hunk status (several magazines has already appointed him to the world's sexiest man).
Before Twilight, Robert Pattinson hade only made a few indie movies apart from his character as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire. He was on his way to give up on acting completely after Little Ashes, a spanish low-budget movie about where he portraits Salvador Dalí. Instead he wanted to dedicate himself to his music- he write and sings his own tunes (two of them were used for the Twilight soundtrack) in a Van Morrison/Jeff Buckley-spirit. His american agent got him to go to La for auditions, including, funny enough, for the True blood vampire series where Alexander Skarsgård is starring, but he was dismissed. He auditioned for Twilight opposite Kristen Stewart at the home of director Catherine Hardwicke. By all the ones who had auditioned, Kristen felt immediately that Rob was the obvious choice, and so it was. From the beginning the book fans was appalled by the choice, but they quickly changed their minds. At the series and film convention Comicon last year the actors participated in a seminar and the pressure from people in the auditorium was so huge that Rob described the feeling as "standing infront of the hell gates".
- Then I was terrified. The sound of all the screaming was like nothing I had heard before, it was indescribable. Now I can accept it, but then I was very afraid.
He says he was surprised by the Twilight phenomenon; the endurance, the widespread fact, that the interest never seems to cool down.
-Where ever I am, people just screams. You can't prepare for any of that. But my goal in life never was to have people scream when they see me, if I did that I would be crazy now, or a real pig. Now it's more like a joke. There's nothing in my contract that says I have to wave to the fans, so the I don't he says and laughs.
Other guys around his age is either Disney made ones who always has to smile and answer polite (Zac Efron) or selfconfident ones (Shia LaBeouf). And indeed, in every interview where anybody says anything disparaging, he goes along, for instance about his character Edward- "I don't understand what girls see in him, if you met him in real life you'd think he was an axmurderer". At the same time it's difficult not to be charmed by an obviously nice looking and talanted guy that doesn't seems to realize that himself. He hates to see himself in the movies. Ten minutes before the premiere of Twilight he had a panic-attack and left the theater. But it looks like the reality has caught up with him.

- You just has to learn to accept the situation, as it stands out right now. I can't fight it. I almost made myself crazy last spring, I was paranoid about everything. But then when we got back to start filming New Moon it felt all right again. I'm going to continue with that now, work all the time without interruption. I'm booked for almost two years ahead and ill not have time to try to live a normal life. I can't go to any of my old places, it only brings out a lot of people.
How does that feel?
-Annoying. One has to change in life.
Do you have many crazy fans?
- One in a hundred. One girl sent a cake to my parents home every third day for six months.
How did she get your address?
- I have no idea! I live in three suitcases in different hotels, so fans sends alot of things to my parents, he says and laughs again while drawing his fingers through the hair.
Today he's wearing a black pikéshirt and black jeans. His skin is light, he has a stubble (?) and his eyelashes are startling long. Rob is known for his, in hollywood dimensions, sloppy outfits, but which is actually a common British indie guy style- washed out t-shirts (like one of his favourites with the russian Stolichnaya vodka print that he's used so much that fans has made a survey on the net on how, when and where it's been repaired and worn), unbuttoned and buttoned wrong plaid shirts and worn out jeans.
But the girls love him- one of many women who's declared her love for Rob are Megan Fox, Jennifer Love Hewitt, his old co-star Emma Watson, Alexa Chung and Miley Cyrus. Gozde, a 23 year old Ph.D. in biochemistry, who spends five hours a day on one of internets biggest Robert Pattinson-blogs (sites), Robsessed, says that the fans passion is understandable.
- He looks like a greek god at the same time as he acts like a dorky shy guy that would start to stutter if you talked to him. He is very funny and smart. It's irresistible!
For three years Rob dated the four year older artist and model Nina Schubert, but now he's single. This fall Rob and Kristin Stewart were secretly photographed together at a Kings of Leon concert in Vancouver and the gossip sites has determined that they're kissing.
The dream couple have been nicknamed "Robsten". Regardless of the truth in this it is obvious that they are close.
-Kristens been through exactly the same thing as I the last year. She's the only person who can relate to me on the same level.

He also described the fanfiction as unexpectedly hardcore. One look shows that it is certainly not an understatement, there are slot meter with pornographic stories with Edward in the lead role.
How is it now, do you read about your self on the internet?
- Sometimes...but it's bad to do so! Really a bad. You poison you brain and it feels terrible. Nothing good can come from reading that, either you will be completely paranoid or you will become vain and superficial, he says and looks down.
In a few minutes the interview will end. The limo waits on the street above and Rob will be brought out surrounded by bodyguards. They will carry him the last way to avoid the photographers and fans. But if the pressure is high in Cannes, it's nothing compared with what to come. After Rob will go to Italy to film the last scenes on New Moon. Thousands of fans has gone to Montepulciano and follows them everyday. During the summer he films the drama Remember Me in New York. Everyday you can follow news from the set on gossip sites and Youtube. He doesn't smile in a single photo all summer. Splash news report that during the last couple of months they've recieved more paparazzi photos on Rob than on Britney Spears. At the Mtv Movie Awards Twilight wins in five categorys, including best movie, best male and female role and best kiss. The trailer to New Moon is released and during it's first week it's viewed over 40 million times on the net, a record number.
They visit Comicon again and the pressure is so huge that the other visitors starts a campaign called "Twilight ruined Comicon". During the late summer Twilight gets 11 awards at the Teen Choice awards.
November 20th is the date that New Moon opens in theatres. The third movie, Eclipse, is out in June 2010. The fourth is going to be ready for christmas same year. Instant famous (?) Robert Pattinson holds it all together as long as he focus on his work. But his ambitions are probebly far more greater then he suggests. Before we are seperated in Cannes I ask him if he would have done anything different if he'd known that Teilight woul be such a success? He thinks, and responds with knitted (?strange translation) eyebrows:
- If I could remake the movie I would try to be even better. I would have wanted to be even better.
