Rock icon Joan Jett is standing on the film set for The Runaways, a biopic based on the all-girl group she co-founded. With her is actress Kristen Stewart, her mullet-styled hair dyed black and thick dark kohl eyeliner around her eyes. Stewart is listening intently to Jett, who is gesticulating with her hands, as if playing an imaginary guitar.
Director Floria Sigismondi, whose past work includes directing music videos for David Bowie and Sheryl Crow, seems awestruck.
"They're like twins," she says. "I mean, I look over and there they are. It's like one of them is holding up a mirror. I can't get over how much they're alike."
But Stewart didn't turn into Jett overnight. For many months before The Runaways started filming, Jett was helping the 20-year-old star.
Jett tells Metro that Stewart now knows more about her than anyone: "I told her things I've never told anyone before," Jett says in her husky voice.
Along with rare recordings she copied for the star, Jett also duplicated tapes she used to send to her aunt when she was a teenager. Jett felt it would help Stewart get to know who she really was beyond the ''pictures of this girl with black hair and heavy make-up''.
