The Runaways (15)
What's it about? A rock biopic about the rise and fall of Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and her band The Runaways.

What we say: What would have been a fairly low key look at a 70s female rock band has been bolstered by the inclusion of two members of the Twilight cast, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. This was originally billed as Stewart's movie as she continues to do her best to forge a career away from teen vampires, though Fanning arguably walks away with it as Cherie Currie, who was only 15 when the band was formed. It's clear that the two leads are putting a lot of effort into the characters, which they need to do as, on paper, they are left a little thin. It's also odd how the rest of the band are left mainly on the sidelines. The 70s are lovingly recreated and provide a satisfying background for what is an essentially familiar tale of sex, drugs and rock n' roll gone bad.

In a nutshell: The actors are giving it their all but the film can't quite give them the platform they deserve. A solidly made film which, although treading over old ground, will keep your interest.

Rating: 7/10
