News: Damian Lewis To Star With Nicole Kidman In "Queen Of The Desert"

Deadline EXCLUSIVE: Damian Lewis, who has won Golden Globes and Emmys for his work as POW-turned-terrorist Nicolas Brody in Showtime’s Homeland, is near a deal to star opposite Nicole Kidman in director Werner Herzog’s Queen Of The Desert. The UK-born Lewis won’t have to hide his homegrown accent for the feature. He will play Lieutenant Colonel Charles Doughty-Wylie, an unhappily married English war hero who engages in a turbulent affair with Gertrude Bell (Kidman), with whom he exchanged love letters with from 1913-1915 until he was killed in active duty at Gallipoli.

Production is scheduled to begin in December.

Queen Of The Desert refers to Bell, the iconic explorer, writer, archeologist and attaché for the British Empire, who is credited with helping to catalyze the formation of the Middle East at the dawn of the 20th Century. Nick Raslan is producing through his Palmyra Films banner along with Cassian Elwes and Michael Benaroya. Benaroya Pictures banner is financing the film. Sierra/Affinity will handle international sales.

The Rover via theroverfilm

The Rover will have a session at the Screen Producers Association of Australia’s (SPAA) annual conference held in Melbourne from Nov. 18-21, 2013.
The Screen Producers Association of Australia’s annual conference presents Screen Forever. This is Australia’s leading media and entertainment conference and the largest congregation of content creators, producers or anyone working in the screen industry who is seeking insight, inspiration, networking, professional development and fun.

The Rover’s session is titled, The Trans-Pacific Partnership:  A Case Study on Financing “The Rover”. It will include, The Rover producer, Liz Watts, and more. Here’s the description of the session from the SPAA website:

The Rover is a rare film – co-produced by a top flight Australian and top-flight US producer with significant foreign money; all built on the promise of David Michod making his second film, and a very strong cast. How did it all come together?

The key players in the financing of The Rover will tell the story of how their involvement started, how the finance plan was created, and what made it such a great deal for everyone.

The session will explore the inception and development of the project, but focus on the deal-making process, what each party brought to the table and what they took away from the project.

The Rover provides a model for cross-Pacific partnerships and how Australian talent can work with American know-how.

We are currently locking down guests for this session. Confirmed guests include:

Speakers

Liz Watts, Producer, Porchlight Films
Zachary Studin, Vice President of Production, Lava Bear Films
Bec Smith, Agent, UTA Independent Film Group and Motion Picture Literary Department

(Video) Eonline: Nicole Kidman on Rob, twilight fans and "Queen of the Desert"

Nicole Kidman Off to Morocco With Robert Pattison, Says She's "Ready" to Face His Twilight Fans

eonline  If you haven't heard by now, the Oscar winner is likely replacing her bestie Naomi Watts to star opposite Pattinson in Queen of the Desert, a period piece about British writer, traveler, archeologist and spy Gertrude Bell.

"That's OK, I'll be ready," Kidman told me about the Twi-fans when I caught up with her Variety's Power of Women event on Friday. "I think they'll have a tough time finding us over there in Morocco, won't they?"

Kidman did admit she still isn't officially attached to the project. "It's not all signed, sealed and delivered," she said. "But…it's certainly in rapid sort of motion."

E! News was the first to tell you that Watts was stepping away from the Werner Herzog-directed film.
"It's still a way's off," she told us back in January 2012 at the Sundance Film Festival. "I don't know yet. Hopefully, it will happen. I just can't travel again right now because I did a lot of traveling last year. It's been a big year and it's time for me to be home with the kids."

Pattinson is to play British Army officer T.A. Lawrence. Earlier this year, James Franco replaced Jude Law as the male led of the movie, British diplomat Henry Cadogan.

Kidman was honored by Variety for her work with the United Nations on women's rights.
She said her mom first introduced her to fighting for women's equality.

"I've traveled all over the world and I feel I never do enough," Kidman said. "So I'm always pushing myself to do more, because it truly is something that can be changed."

James Franco Talks About Rob And 'Queen of the Desert' (Video)

Mtv Another rumored project of Franco's is director Werner Herzog's "Queen of the Desert," which centers around the friendship between T.E. Lawrence and Gertrude Bell, and stars Robert Pattinson and, potentially, Nicole Kidman (after Naomi Watts reportedly dropped out).

"I hope. I met with Werner about it. I've known Werner for a while," Franco said. "He's a huge 'Spring Breakers' fan. The talks about that movie really started after he saw 'Spring Breakers' and gave me one of the best phone calls ever. He called me up with Harmony and just was raving about Alien. He said, 'This movie is like the most important movie of the times. When people look back on 2013, they won't look at Obama's re-election speech, they will look to 'Spring Breakers' to tell us about these times, hundreds of years from now."

True Francophiles know the actor has had something of a fascination with Robert Pattinson and "The Twilight Saga" for years, but "Queen of the Desert" wouldn't be his first meeting with the British actor, apparently.

"I actually met Robert through Harmony," Franco revealed. "Maybe I'll work with him. It's supposed to happen maybe later this year. I don't think I have any scenes with Pattinson in 'Queen of the Desert.' Harmony wants to work with him. He's a nice guy, so I'd be willing."

Werner Herzog On Rob "I hope we will see him one day as a director"

focus.de Playboy: For your next film 'Queen of the Desert' you have cast 'Twilight' teen heartthrob Robert Pattinson. Herzog: He approached me. That is why I am taken seriously in Hollywood. Because so many good actors want to work with me. Nicolas Cage was never better than in 'Bad Lieutenant'.

Playboy: What do you see in Robert Pattinson ? Herzog: He has charisma, he is smart, he writes. I hope we will see him one day as a director. 'Queen of the Desert' is not yet fully funded, and we don't know yet where we will shoot. Possibly, that should be in Syria.
