#5YearsOfTwilight Great Article About "The Twilight Saga" Legacy

Love 'Hunger Games'? Thank 'Twilight'
Forbes As fans eagerly await the first public screenings of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (tonight at 8pm), they should take a moment to thank the film that made it possible. Today marks the fifth anniversary of the release of Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight. It’s a milestone worth celebrating, even if it’s more popular to only deride the five-film franchise as somehow harmful to cinema and society as a whole. It’s no secret that mainstream media aimed at women and minorities are often held to a higher moral standard than those aimed at white males and the Kristen Stewart/Robert Pattinson romantic drama was no exception. But putting aside the debates about its quality or its morality (because male-centric blockbusters are all superb and have no grey morality), it is clear five years later that Twilight had the most positive effect on gender parity in mainstream films than any other film of this generation.

You’d think that Hollywood would have noticed the $1.8 billion success of James Cameron’s epic romance Titanic back in 1997 which was partially fueled by younger women seeing the film countless times in theaters. But instead of crafting big-budget entries centered around females, studios merely spent the next decade increasing the arbitrary young-love quotient in male-centric films like Armageddon and The Patriot. Even animation, once a place for female-centric narratives like Pocahontas or Anastasia became a proverbial boy’s club in the wake of Shrek and Pixar’s rise to the degree that Brave was considered a “big deal” in 2012. By the time Twilight rolled around, the conventional wisdom was that female-centric films were tantamount of box office poison due to the whole “girls will see boy films but boys won’t see girl films” cliche.

Female-centric hits like Deep Impact, Charlie’s Angels, Sex & the City: The Movie, or Mama Mia! were written off as flukes and not to be used as a template for success, while female-centric flops like Electra or Catwoman was held up as proof that female-driven superheroes were box office poison. But Twilight kick-started its franchise five years ago with a stunning $69 million opening weekend and eventually earned $392m worldwide on a $38m budget. Unlike the quick-kill sequels which generally opened over/under $140m and ended up over/under $290m domestic, it didn’t collapse after opening weekend, earning $192m off that $69m debut weekend, a solid 2.76x multiplier. Its fan base peaked at New Moon, but it along with the Harry Potter sequels, helped prove that you didn’t need to expand your fan base if that fan base was big enough.

Twilight and its respective sequels finally and indisputably proved that there was a real and potent market for blockbuster franchises explicitly aimed at, and unquestionably about, women. When The Twilight Saga: New Moon shocked the industry by opening with $142 million four years ago this weekend, the most interesting statistic was that the audience was 80% women. Aside from a missed marketing opportunity for Ninja Assassin  (“So, your girlfriend dragged you to New Moon, now it’s YOUR turn to pick the movie!”), the stat showed that even if not a single ticket buyer for New Moon had been male, the film still would have snagged the biggest opening weekend of 2009. This was hard proof that a film entirely targeted at females, centered around a female, and concerning the narrative journey of a female, could attract genuine blockbuster dollars without the male audience.

I won’t hold the films up as high art but nor would I needlessly denigrate them. I like Hardwicke’s quirky and self-aware original quite a bit thanks to its delightful supporting cast (Billy Burke is arguably the series’s unsung hero). Bill Condon’s series finale contains (no spoilers) one of the all-time great ‘the theater goes crazy” climactic shockers and one of the all-time great super-powered action sequences. The franchise dragged a bit in the middle chapters, partially due to the kind of fan-service fidelity that wouldn’t be out of place in today’s Marvel films (cough-Coulson-cough). Also, unlike most franchises that were anchored by action and spectacle (or at least marketed as such), Twilight films were firmly rooted in character interaction and romantic melodrama. Twilight Saga wasn’t just a female-centric blockbuster franchise, it was one that wasn’t merely a case of putting a female in a stereo-typically male-centric action picture and calling it progressive ( IE – what Sucker Punch tried to satirize).

We can debate the franchise’s complicated moral compass, but I would argue fans no more wholeheartedly endorsed the franchise’s somewhat questionable gender politics than the fandom of Transformers automatically became neoconservative hawks. It can even be argued that Ana Kendrick’s wise and thoughtful best buddy, Billy Burke’s sympathetic father, as well as other members of the Cullen clan all convincingly spoke for the nay-sayers as a counterpoint to those rooting for a Bella/Edward courtship (Bella’s journey is arguably closest to The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast than something like Grease). The packed audience of “Twi-hards” with which I watched Breaking Dawn part II were a rabid and excited bunch that laughed in all the same spots as the detractors did and watched with glee rather than reverence. They were just laughing with the films instead of at them and frankly their joy was infectious.

Frankly a big reason why the Twilight Saga was such a bit hit with women is because, well, it actually had many women in starring and supporting roles. For genre fans who wanted to see the female gender represented onscreen by more than one token or two token hot girls in a given blockbuster franchise (re – the “Smurfette Syndrome”), Twilight was pretty much the only game in town. In an era when Alice Eve in her panties is a key Star Trek Into Darkness promotional image and Thor: The Dark World gets held up as a big deal in superhero cinema because it contains four (!) female supporting characters, the Twilight Saga stood out by virtue of its assortment of females who expressed differing opinions about the story as it unfolded. There were plenty of blockbusters with strong female characters in co-leading roles (Pirates of the Caribbean, Avatar, etc.), but Twilight was rare in that it was completely anchored around a teen girl’s journey, something rare even 25+ years after the underrated and unapologetically feminist/progressive Dirty Dancing.

In the end, the five-film franchise made $3.3 billion in combined worldwide grosses off a combined production budget of $385 million. It started with a stunning $35 million opening day gross for the first Twilight, five years ago today, and continued to shatter box office records (it broke the midnight record twice, in 2009 and 2010) and destroy pretty much all conventional wisdom about what kind of films could be blockbusters. The most important legacy of Twilight isn’t the stardom of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, nor the critical debates the films caused over their subtexts, or even the individual successes of each installment or the copycats it inspired. Twilight‘s legacy is that it proved once and for all that females were a strong enough movie going demographic to power a franchise to blockbuster heights all by themselves.

T-02244Twilight begat The Hunger Games which begat a flurry of would-be fantasy franchises. No matter if Divergent or Fifty Shades of Grey hit anywhere near the heights of even the first Twilight or ends up in the dustbin of franchise history alongside The Host, the notion of a female-centric blockbuster franchise as a viable investment is here to stay. Five years ago, Twilight proved once-and-for-all that the female-centric blockbuster was no fluke and no fallacy. It proved that you didn’t need the elusive male “cross-over” audience, and it proved that you didn’t need to expand your targeted fan base if your fan base was big enough already, a lesson currently being taken to heart by films like Instructions Not Included and The Best Man Holiday.

Love Twilight or hate Twilight (I’m firmly in the “like” category), the Bella/Edward romantic fantasy was in its own way the most feminist franchise in recent memory.

It proved that female-driven blockbusters could do anything that male-driven blockbusters could do at the box office. If you’ve already bought your ticket to the next Katniss Everdeen adventure tonight, you can thank Bella Swan for that privilege. ScottMendelson

(Video) Director Bill Condon Reveals Supercut of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – Parts 1 and 2

Collider Although he was in attendance at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival to talk about his great new film The Fifth Estate, when I spoke to director Bill Condon at the press junket, I landed an interesting bit of news about his last two films, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Parts 1 and 2.  Even though there’s a huge box-set for the complete series coming out this fall, Condon revealed the existence of his own personal cut of the last two films that merge them into one, epic supercut.  He says this was to combine both parts into one movie to be more like reading the final Twilight novel in a single issue, and for fans who might be interested in seeing it.  Unfortunately, there’s no word on just when this supercut will see the light.

Here’s what Condon had to say about this alternate cut of the last two films.  If you’d like to read his quotes, it’s below the video.  If you’d like to see this version of the film leave a comment.  I’m sure at least a few people at Summit/Lionsgate will see the story.  You never know what can happen.

Collider: There’s a huge Twilight box-set coming out later this year.  Have you done anything for it?  Did you contribute anything?
Bill Condon: Well, I think we did so much for the extended edition of [The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1], I think there’s probably extra stuff on [The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2], although not additional scenes, unfortunately, because that movie is so unbelievably visual effects heavy, it would cost a ton of money to actually create the environment for some of those extra scenes.  But, I do have a kind of version of those two movies cut into one movie that is not going to be there, but I hope one day might emerge. I think it would be an interesting experience for those who are really into it.

When you say you have a new version, are there a lot of things different, or is it just one cut?
No, it’s just one cut. There are obviously adjustments you have to make and rearranging some of the stuff. Just making it into one seamless thing, making it feel more like the original novel.

image host Did you do that while editing [The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1]?
Condon: Yeah, I did it before we shut down the editing room.

This is interesting, I’m surprised that Summit hasn’t come around and said, “Let’s release that as a double feature in select theaters.”

Condon: Right, yeah. It’d be interesting. Maybe that’ll happen.

Look for more with Bill Condon soon.

Stephenie Meyer looks back on a decade of 'Twilight'

app The rest, as they say, is history. Meyer’s four-book teen vampire romance saga has sold more than 100 million copies since the publication of the first book in 2005 and launched a hit film franchise.
Now the producer of the film version of friend Shannon Hale’s comedic novel “Austenland,” Meyer reflected on the 10-year journey “Twilight” has taken her on.

“It feels like I’m super, super old,” said Meyer, 39. “Like 10 years? Oh, my gosh, I don’t know where it went. But it’s amazing to stop and think back to my life 10 years ago and how drastically it has changed. I just wouldn’t have seen any of it coming. If you had told me back then, ‘Ten years from now you’ll be promoting a movie you produced,’ I’d have been like, ‘What drugs are you taking?’ It’s so bizarre.”

The massive success of “Twilight” led Meyer to the world of film production. Through her company Fickle Fish Films, she produced the two-part adaptation of “The Twilight Saga – Breaking Dawn” in 2011 and 2012, and earlier this year released the film version of her novel “The Host.”

“They’re so different,” Meyer said of the film and literature worlds. “I feel like it’s a completely different kind of artistic outlet. Writing is so solitary and so much in your own head. You have to enjoy being a hermit, which I very much do.

“Film is a chance to be creative with a big group of people and work with other people’s ideas and kind of see how people do things and learn from that. And so in a way, doing the movies that I’ve done has been a lot like taking a couple of semesters of college, it’s my own little film school. And I love learning new things, so I’ve really enjoyed that.”

There’s been some talk of a ghost story or a mermaid tale from the author in the future, but Meyer remained mum on the subject of her next written work.

“See, back in the early days I used to tell people about all of the ideas that I had floating in my head that I assumed would become books at some point,” she said. “But then, people have the expectation that it will be out in six months, and so I really don’t talk about what I’m working on anymore because it changes a lot.

“I’ll be working on something and then another idea will drag me away. I guess that’s really my problem, committing to one idea and sticking with it. And so I’m not going to talk about what I’m working on right now.”

In the years since the initial success of “Twilight,” plenty of folks have been busy making jokes at the franchise’s expense. What’s Meyer’s take on the “Twilight” parodies and mockery?

“Oh, I think it’s fun,” she said. “I think my favorite is probably the ‘South Park’ episode that was ‘Twilight’ related, that one was hysterical. As long as something makes me laugh, I’m all for it.”

Update: Charlie Bewley Photoshoot and Interview with Topman Generation - Twilight & Rob mentions

New Photo:

Star of upcoming Viking epic 'Hammer Of The Gods', Charlie Bewley talks about life as a modern day action hero and life after the Twilight franchise.

The Brits are taking over Hollywood and vampires are dominating both the film and television scene right now. So, it’d only make sense that somewhere in Los Angeles there would be a British vampire knocking about. Say hello to Charlie Bewley.

Twi-hards will remember Bewley best from playing Volturi vampire enforcer Demetri in the Twilight series, but he has spent some time batting for the other team  - playing vampire slayer Vaughn in television series The Vampire Diaries.  Now the star of upcoming Viking epic Hammer Of The Gods, we caught up with Bewley to talk about life as a modern day action hero.

Topman Generation:  Charlie you’ve rocked up today in distressed boots with a grey tee and some cargo trousers that have a hole revealing red underwear...
Charlie Bewley:
(pulls at his briefs through the hole) Maroon actually! (laughs)

TG: Is this an average look for you?
CB: Yeah, I’d describe my dress sense as minimalist. If I was cruising on the Nebuchadnezzar in Matrix land this is the stuff I’d wear. I like to keep it simple and tend to dress so I’m ready for anything. I’ve got two pairs of shoes – these ones I’m wearing are my hobo boots (Charlie’s wearing a brown pair of distressed brown boots that look like the sole are about to fall off) and these are pretty versatile. My other shoes are my New Balance Minimalist, which are my running shoes.

TG: How’d would you describe your dress sense as a child?
CB: Oh man, my mum was a hippie. I was like the kid from About A Boy! (laughs) I remember being six when I tried pulling off double denim and I remember getting sent out of the dinner hall! I wore shell suits a lot as well. I looked like an overdressed footballer.

TG: What are you most looking forward to about today’s shoot?
CB:
Mostly I’m looking forward to dressing smartly for once! This funky printed suit (the first look we shoot on set) looks pretty cool! Very 60s inspired. I’m definitely more of an underdresser than an overdresser when it comes to events. I have no idea how to dress (laughs). When it comes to events I tend to go left of the traffic lights. When it came to one of the Twilight premieres I wore this outfit by Skin Graft. It was a long gothic fur coat, all sleek and Matrixy.

TG: Now you’ve mentioned it, let’s talk about Twilight. During the franchise you played Demetri, an enforcer for the Volturi who’s known for his tracking ability. How are you keeping track of your mates in the pub or the supermarket?
CB:
(laughs) Oh I just let them go! When I’m in a club or a pub I switch off my tracker and just go with the flow. I’m probably quite a bad tracker to be honest!  I had to buff up for the role of Demetri!

TG: What was it like being a member of Twilight cast, it must have been a whirlwind for the four films you were a part of.
CB:
It was a bit of an ego trip for four years. I got sent this YouTube video three years ago from a Brazilian Twilight fan of half of my face tattooed on her thigh! It took me about three seconds to properly take it in. Sure enough, three months later she sent me another photo of the full face tattooed on her leg.  It’s a pretty damn good likeness of me as well. Except for the fact that the next day I got my hair cut so it was outdated immediately. She got the tattoo right there on the leg, so if she was wearing shorts you’d see the lower half of my face. And every time she goes to the toilet they’ll be my face staring up at her.

TG: You also starred as vampire hunter Vaughn in The Vampire Diaries. Now; being a vampire, or slaying them, which one is more fun?
CB:
I loved being in Twilight. Hunting vampires in Vampire Diaries was cool – I was essentially a badass with loads of cool weapons but there’s no superpowers to it. And I got killed so many times in Vampire Diaries it was wasn’t even funny.

TG: Didn’t you die at the end of the Twilight Saga?
CB: Kinda… in Alice’s vision I did. The fact is… Robert Pattison can’t fight. (laughs)

TG: Let’s talk about your upcoming film “Hammer Of The Gods”. You’re playing a Viking on a bloody quest, so once again you’re covered in mud messing around in the forest…
CB:
Yeah I love it. Filming Hammer Of The Gods was a thrill. Five weeks of physical mayhem – it’s the stuff I got into acting for.

TG: In Hammer Of The Gods, you get sent by your dying father to track down your brother to lead the Vikings against an invading horde. You’re one of four siblings, have you ever been sent on a quest like that by your parents?
CB:
I was quite a mischievous kid so it was the opposite for me. My parents were probably telling my brother to go get me back from Vancouver to run the farm in Leicester.

TG: Let’s talk about music for a bit, what are you currently playing on your iPod?
CB:
I’m a massive fan of trance music. I’d recommend In Search Of Sunrise vol 2 by Tiesto to anyone who wants to get started in trance. At the moment I’m moving back through the years to Sasha & Digweed. I’m going to be in Argentina soon and I’ll be looking to catch a Hernan Cattaneo show. Wherever he goes he has an army of South American fans that follow and it ends up with a night out that looks like the rave scene in Matrix Reloaded.

TG: That’s the third time you’ve referenced The Matrix films now, would you say you’re a big sci-fi fan?
CB:
I’m definitely a fan of The Matrix films. Sci-fi in general like Star Wars and Star Trek, not so much. I love anything that plays on the fine line between reality and fantasy completely fascinates me.

TG: You’ve lived in LA for four years, how does the fashion back in Blighty compare?
CB:
I’d say that Britain is a lot more of a gold fish bowl when it comes to fashion - everyone here is dressed to impress. Whenever I come back there’s all sorts of crazy trends going off, be it in hair styles, accessories, trouser colours or whatever. The dress sense of people in the UK is definitely a lot more abstract than how it is in LA.

TG: You’ve mentioned going to Argentina soon, what’s next for Charlie?
CB:
It’s a new film I’m in called Rules Of The Game. I’m looking to corner the market for films that have “Of The” in the title. It’s a bit like a cross between The Hangover and Deliverance with a little bit of Stand By Me. I’m part of a group of four British friends who go on a stag do and things go slightly awry.

TG: Ok then, one final thing, tell us one thing the world doesn’t know about Charlie Bewley
CB:
Ermm… When I was younger I had a thing for French knitting. No idea why, I guess I just thought I was cool. Also, I got given a Category Two  (a report calling you immature) in Officer’s Training because I was training with a guy called Robin Hood and every time he said his name I creased my pants.

I aced all the physical tests and near the end of my weekend we had to get up and talk about ourselves a bit. I did great - probably a bit arrogant, but at the end of the group talk this guy came up in front of the Sergeant Major and goes “My name’s Robin Hood” and I lost my shit. If I’d have got Category One I’d have gone straight to Sandhurst. But then I’d never be here doing stuff like this I guess.

Brit Politician Says Teens Should Read Middlemarch, not Twilight Tnxs @TwilightLexicon

Michael Gove Attacks Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Series, Says Children Should Read Middlemarch

Huffpost Students   Michael Gove has incurred the wrath of an army of angry Twilight fans after rubbishing Stephenie Meyer's hit series, saying he'd rather his children read Middlemarch.

In a speech at Brighton College on Thursday, the education secretary told his audience: "Too many children are only too happy to lose themselves in Stephenie Meyer."

"There is a Great Tradition of English Literature, a Canon of transcendent works, & Breaking Dawn is not part of it," he continued.

"You come home to find your 17-year-old daughter engrossed in a book. Which would delight you more... Twilight or Middlemarch?," Gove then added, according to a Financial Times reporter.

But taking on Twilight wasn't enough for the minister, who then gave the game pool a pummelling shortly after launching an attack on the most downloaded game of all time - Angry Birds.

"You see your son is totally absorbed, hunched over the family laptop," Gove said. "You steal a look over his shoulder - and what would please you more - to see him playing Angry Birds, or coding?," Politics.co.uk reported.

"Your son says he wants to spend more time with one particular group of friends. Which would be more inspiring - because he wants to improve his pool or because they're in the cadets and he wants to join?"

Photobucket
Check out dose.ca's quick and informative Q&A with 'Twilight Saga' music supervisor, Alexandra Patsavas:
"The Twilight Saga Soundtracks Volume 1, a collection of music videos and never-before-seen live performances of songs included on the three Twilight Saga soundtracks, arrives in stores Dec. 4, the same day that the Twilight Saga: Eclipse DVD drops. And while the DVD release gives Twilight completists a reason to update their holiday wish-lists, it also gave Dose.ca the opportunity to speak with the series’ music supervisor. Here, Patsavas shares some info on what it takes to make a Twilight soundtrack and why no artist -- no matter who -- would ever surprise her by asking to be part of the series."

Anna Kendrick Glad To Escape Twilight Hype

ANNA Kendrick is “so relieved” that she gets to escape the Twilight hype.

The actress — who reprises her role as one of Bella’s teen pals in the third Twilight movie Eclipse — says she’s glad she doesn’t have to deal with any of the hysteria endured by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

“I’m so relieved,” she says. “I get to be in Twilight and that’s it. I get to be in it and be a part of it but I get to leave the house and live a normal life.

“I feel like I’m living this strange double-life because when I go home I get to do the same things I always have. I know that’s not the case for Robert or Kristen and I know that’s hard for them.”

Anna recently revealed that she wants to learn how to play pool.

“I really want to learn to play pool,” she said. “I don’t want to be one of those chicks in a bar that you know, needs her boyfriend to set up a shot for her. So that’s a life goal for me.”

Robert Pattinson (Eclipse) in Bravo Magazine (Germany), Scans

The text for scan 1:

A bloodthirsty vampire-army, snarling Werewolves, spectacular fights as a matter of life and death…

The new Trailer for Eclipse (in cinemas 15th of July) sends cold shivers down your back. So grim. Sinister. Dangerous. Two-fisted Action instead of big feelings: The triangle-Relationship between Werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner), Vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson) and the mortal Bella (Kristen Stewart) almost becomes a irrelevant fact. When there’s so much danger around there’s not much time for love. Bella’s hometown Forks/Washington becomes the stage of a struggle between good and evil, caused by the nasty Bloodsuckers Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard). With a army of brutal vampire-monsters, she wants to revenge her mates James (Cam Cigandet) death — he was killed by the Cullens in the first part of the Twilight saga. Now Bella and her friends are supposed to die for that! However it becomes even worse: The Volturi, Ruler of the Vampire-Underworld [Bleriana side note: VAMPIRE-UNDERWORLD??? REALLY???], show up in Forks all of a sudden. They have it in for Bella too. Chaos and distress spread…

The Stills:

1. Screams of pain tear apart the night: The student Riley (Xavier Samuel) was bitten by Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard). He’s transforming into a vampire.

2. And Riley is not alone! The mean Vampire creates countless bloodthirsty monsters, that terrify Seattle/Washington.

3. The newborn vampires make their way to Forks — where they have to kill Bella and her friends. The Cullens have to face a huge fight!

4. Jacobs Werewolf-clique wind the trouble. They want to support the cullens in their fight against the bad.

5. What nobody guesses: The Volturi-fighters Felix (Daniel Cudmore), Jane (Dakota Fanning), Alec (Cameron Bright) and Demetri (Charlie Bewley, from left) travel to Froks too — on their search for Bella…

6. Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) have hidden in the hills. But Victoria has scented them out

7. And the Army has arrived in Forks by then too. they want to destroy the other Cullen Family members.

8. It results into a bloody fight where many loose their lives.
