The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 has classification stepped down to M after successful appeal.
The distributors of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 have succeeded in having the film reclassified M, after an initial decision had rated the film MA15+ with the consumer advice "strong themes".
The Classification Review Board has announced that a three member panel have unanimously determined that the film be classified M (Mature) with the consumer advice "supernatural themes and medical procedures".
The statement explained that "The National Classification Code and Classification Guidelines allows for the M classification to apply where the treatment of themes have a moderate sense of threat or menace, if justified by context. In the Classification Review Board’s opinion The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 warrants an M classification because the treatment of themes such as supernatural elements and those relating to pregnancy and child birth are presented in a way that allows them to be accommodated within the M classification."
Specifically "the lack of explicit visual detail contributed to the Review Board’s decision that the themes could be accommodated at the M level. The overall impact of the classifiable elements in the film including sexual references and violence was no higher than moderate."
While films classified M are not recommended for persons under 15 years of age, there are no legal restrictions on access. The initial MA15+ rating required those under 15 to be accompanied by an adult.
