Lane Garrison talk about "Camp X-Ray" at #Sundance2014

Premiering Camp X-Ray with Lane Garrison
mycampustalk

Camp X-Ray just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. How was your experience there?
It was really well received. Camp X-Ray was just sold to IFC, so that’s pretty big news. At Sundance, we had standing ovation after standing ovation and people were in tears, so it was better than I’d even expected. I saw the film at the premiere for the first time, so I was shocked by how well it was received. We’re all still just riding that wave.

What’s Camp X-Ray’s premise?

It’s about a new member of the army who’s played by Kristin Stewart. She’s one of those girls who doesn’t know what she wants to do with her life, so she joins the military.
They send her to Guantanamo Bay and her world is turned upside down. She befriends a detainee and it’s this weird relationship triangle between her, the detainee and myself. I play a corporal who basically runs Guantanamo Bay and who’s just desensitized to it all because I’ve been in that environment for so long. He thinks all the prisoners are guilty of 9/11 and they all deserve to rot there. When Amy (played by Stewart) comes in and makes friends with the detainee, she questions that thinking.
It seems like a very thought-provoking film.

One of the questions it’s really provoked is about what we should do with the detainees in Guantanamo Bay. Before, my way of thinking was very much alike, they’re all guilty of 9/11, let them rot down there. This film really made me think, guilty or innocent, these men deserve their day in court.

Maybe there’s one innocent guy who was accidentally picked up on the battlefield, and these guys deserve a trial before a court of law.

Do you think the audience had the same reaction?

The whole audience was in tears, but at the same time, it obviously generated a lot of thought. When you see the film, you’ll think about how there’s still something like 170 detainees down there. A lot of countries won’t even take these men. As busy Americans, we get so caught up in our own daily lives that we don’t stop and think, “What else is going on?” I think this is one of those films that’s going to invoke new emotions in everyone.

Chloë Grace Moretz mentions Kristen #CampX-Ray and #CloudsofSilsMaria at Sundance

Any friends you have been looking forward to running into?

I was talking to Kristen [Stewart] because I want to see her film “Camp X-Ray”. I wanted to see her but she’s leaving today! I just did “Clouds of Sils Maria” with her that is coming out later this year. She literally came in, did press all day and now she’s out. It’s crazy.

Now she is being asked to step into the other role, that of the older Helena.
She departs with her assistant (Kristen Stewart) to rehearse in Sils Maria; a remote region of the Alps. A young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal (Chloë Grace Moretz) is to take on the role of Sigrid, and Maria finds herself on the other side of the mirror, face to face with an ambiguously charming woman who is, in essence, an unsettling reflection of herself.

IFC Films Acquires 'Camp X-Ray' North American Rights

 photo Kstewartfans_zps2cba8417.jpg

The Wrap IFC Films has acquired North American rights to Peter Sattler’s directorial debut “Camp X-Ray,” which stars Kristen Stewart as a Guantanamo Bay guard, the company announced Thursday.Sattler also wrote the film, which was produced by Gina Kwon and executive produced by Emmy Ellison, Lindsay Williams, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, David Gordon Green and Sophia Lin.
Payman Maadi and Lane Garrison co-star in the movie, which premiered in competition at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

Stewart plays a young woman who joins the military to be part of something bigger than herself and her small town roots, but ends up as a rookie guard at Guantanamo Bay. Her mission is far from black and white, as she is surrounded by hostile jihadists and aggressive male squadmates. When she strikes up an unusual friendship with one of the detainees (Maadi), both of their worlds are forever shifted.

“Peter Sattler has made a stirring, sensitive and thought-provoking film that features two powerhouse performances by Payman Maadi and Kristen Stewart,” said Jonathan Sehring, president of Sundance Selects/IFC Films. “Maadi proves once again that he is a force to be reckoned with and Stewart undoubtedly gives the best and most moving performance of her already remarkable career.”
