Christina Ricci and Kristin Scott Thomas talk about 'Bel Ami' and Robert Pattinson

Christina Ricci talks about working with Rob in 'Bel Ami'.

Besides being busy with Pan Am, Ricci has finished filming the movie Bel Ami, which is based on French author Guy de Maupassant's 1885 novel of the same name. Opening here on March 29, it also stars Uma Thurman, Robert Pattinson and Kristin Scott Thomas.

About Pattinson, Ricci would say only that the Twilight heart-throb, who plays the corrupt protagonist Georges Duroy, was an "amazing" guy to work with.

Kristin Scott Thomas talks about her character in 'Bel Ami'.

The actress has also got her fair share of English-language roles coming up. As Virginie Walters in Bel Ami she plays against type. Her character starts off as a Scott Thomas archetype, cold and ruthless, but then goes gaga over Robert Pattinson, behaving like a teenage fan of Twilight.

I ask if she wanted to play against type. "Not really; I wasn't aware of doing that," comes the initial reply. Yet she soon talks herself around to my way of thinking. "I know people think that I always play these characters who are in control and can chop someone's head off with a look. Maybe you are right in a way; that part was particularly enticing to me because she's a woman who loses all her dignity. But I also wanted to do the film because Nick Ormerod and Declan Donnellan were directing. I'd met Declan on many occasions and we'd tried to make theatre together, but it had never really worked out; so this was an opportunity."

She then reveals that she had agreed to star in an adaptation of Guy de Maupassant's Bel Ami years ago, when Vincent Cassel was cast in the lead role and she was to play the controlling female Madeleine Forestier. Coming full circle she ends by adding, "Piffle! I don't think the way that people see me in French film is so different to how they see me in English films. To do Pawel's film is great because I'm allowed to go to both places, which is exciting."

Christina Ricci Calls Robert Pattinson a Lovely Individual

Was Broad way always part of your plan?
No, I had ter ri ble stage fright, so peo ple even tu ally stopped bring ing it up. But when I was com ing back from mak ing Bel Ami with Robert Pat tin son, my agent, who also rep re sents Laura Lin ney, asked me if I wanted to read for Time Stands Still, and I com pletely for got I had stage fright. Liter ally, walk ing home from the audi tion, I was like, Oh, shit, I just remem bered I hate act ing in front of peo ple. So now I’m sort of ignor ing it.
I love how casu ally you just name dropped R-Patz. Are you a Twi light fan?
OK, first of all, pub li cists train you to say your cred its along with your costars. You can’t be shy about self-promotion; it’s like Kathy Grif fin or some thing. [Laughs] I’m a very lazy pop cul ture fan—if it involves leav ing my liv ing room, I’m pretty clueless—so I’ve never seen a sin gle Twi light movie, and I guess I missed it when it was on Starz. But Rob’s a lovely individual.
Do you two share a love scene in Bel Ami?
We do. But he’s like your best friend’s lit tle brother, so we would just laugh and make fun of each other the entire time. He thought it was out ra geous how com fort able I was being naked. I was like, “That’s because I’m 20 years older than you.” Seri ously, I’ve never felt so old in my entire life.

InStyle: Exclusive! Christina Ricci Dishes on Kissing Robert Pattinson

Photobucket
At last night’s Blackberry Torch launch in L.A., Christina Ricci couldn’t contain her feelings for her Bel Ami co-star Robert Pattinson. “We would just goof off and laugh while we were working—he’s a sweet guy and super funny…and a really good kisser!” she told us. And what was her favorite part of filming? “The costumes, the makeup and… Rob!” But Ricci admitted she hasn’t even seen the films that are responsible for his fame. “I was waiting for [The Twilight Saga films] to be on TV because the theaters were so crowded, but there’s no excuse!” Ricci also said it’s easy to understand why Kristen Stewart, who stopped by the set several times, is so smitten with her Twilight and real-life co-star Pattinson: “He’s so charming and such a smart guy. He’s so super organized and in charge of his career. He was actually giving me advice!” the veteran actress said.

Empire talks Bel ami and RPattz (there are those screams again)

Robert Pattinson. Pause, wait for the screams to die down. Yes, R-Pattz (or whatever the heck he's called these days) is continuing his non-Twilight career, starring in romantic comedy / drama Bel Ami. And now the likes of Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Christina Ricci are joining the cast.
Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod are co-directing the film, which is adapted from Guy de Maupassant's story.
Pattinson (there are those screams again) is a lad in 1890s Paris who sleeps his way to wealth and celebrity as he climbs the social ladder from humble beginnings.
Though we're sure Pattinson will be the main draw for a lot of people, Holly Grainger, Philip Glenister and Colm Meaney are also in the cast. Which means - ultra-nerd alert - that two versions of Life On Mars' Gene Hunt will now be in one film (Meaney played him in in the pilot for the US version, before he was unfairly replaced by Harvey Keitel).
But back to Bel Ami: it has just kicked off shooting this week and will be followed around London and Budapest by a gaggle of screaming Team Edward types.

Casting Complete on BEL AMI

Over the last few months, pre-production on Robert Pattinson's Bel Ami has been charging forward as we've covered the casting of Christina Ricci and Uma Thurman / Kristin Scott Thomas. Now that the casting of the major players has been completed, we've been told principal photography on Bel Ami is scheduled to begin February 7 and they'll be filming in London and Budapest. Here's the synopsis:

Bel Ami is the story of Georges Duroy (Robert Pattinson), who travels through 1890s Paris, from cockroach ridden Garretsen to opulent salons, using his wits and powers of seduction to rise from poverty to wealth, from a prostitute's embrace to passionate trysts with wealthy beauties, in a world where politics and media jostle for influence, where power and celebrity sex is an obsession.

Based on the synopsis, I think Pattinson's female fanbase is going to be very happy watching this movie. Hit the jump for more:

The other bit of news we were informed of each actor is exactly who is playing in the film and some more casting info. Here's what we were sent:

Robert Pattinson plays Georges Duroy in this erotically charged story of ambition, power and seduction. Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill) is Madeleine, Kristin Scott Thomas (Nowhere Boy, I've Loved You So Long) is Virginie, Christina Ricci (Monster, The Ice Storm) is Clotilde, Holly Grainger (Scouting Book for Boys) is Suzanne, Philip Glenister (Life on Mars, Calendar Girls) is Charles, and Colm Meaney (The Damned United, The Snapper) plays Duroy's adversary, Rousset. The screenplay is written by Rachel Bennette from the novel by Guy de Maupassant, and the film is directed by the influential and innovative Cheek By Jowl directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod.

BEL AMI is produced by Uberto Pasolini (The Full Monty, Machan) with as executive producer Simon Fuller. The director of photography is Hagen Bogdanski (The Young Victoria, The Lives of Others), Attila F. Kovacs (Sunshine, Meeting Venus) is production designer, the costumes are designed by Odile Dicks-Mireaux (An Education, The Constant Gardener), the hair and make-up designer is Jenny Shircore (The Young Victoria, Elizabeth: The Golden Age) and the editor is Masahiro Hirakubo (The Duchess, Trainspotting).
