One Day in Ripper Street - Myanna Buring and cast interview

thecustardtv When I woke up on the morning of July 23rd the heavens had opened. The first few hours of the morning saw biblical amounts of rain and lightning that could lit up every room of the house. Weather of this brutal nature would normally cause me to bury my head deeper within the warmth of my covers and drift off back to sleep, but this morning I was off to Ripper Street!
The short flight to Dublin was surprisingly smooth given the weather we had experienced earlier in the day and it wasn't long until we (me and every other journalist) where piled onto a bus and driven to the army barracks which is magically transformed into the dirty streets of East London that we know on Ripper Street. I've been to a fair few sets this year but none with quite the grandeur and scale of this. For a spilt second it doesn't seem real and then after you've stepped onto the cobbles and peered down the various alleyways and tunnels you forget you're on  a set at all.
The design team here have excelled themselves. Every nook of Ripper Street feels wonderfully authentic. There are elements to the set that you don't even notice from the comfort of your sofa. The posters, the toilets, the signs every element adds to the fantastic atmosphere that oozes from the screen.

So what was it like being reunited after a long break for season 2?
Matthew Macfadyen: It was quite odd, it was really like no time had passed.
Adam Rothenberg: It was really very casual because a lot of people had been working here throughout the year. We were the only ones who had been away.  No one was particularly enthused to see us again!

Had you all kept in touch during the break?
Matthew Macfadyen: We went to LA to do the launch of this on BBC America so we met up there and MyAnna and me did a job together.."
(..)
After our wander down the infamous street the cast (Matthew Mcfadyen, Adam Rothenberg, MyAnna Buring and Jerome Flynn) joined us for a Q&A and discussed the reactions to series 1 as well as what we can expect from the upcoming second run.

How do you enjoy the costume aspect to it?
MyAnna Buring: You're looking at me in particular aren't you! The corset is a love/hate thing. Some days it's fantastic, others you can't move. They help a  lot with the character, you walk in a different way you've got a different posture. Long Susan's dresses are incredible. The craftsmanship is something really special.

MyAnna can you tell us what happens with you in this series?
MyAnna Buring: Charlene has left the brothel and gone into Music Hall and Long Susan supports it. She takes Jackson to watch her do her thing.  When we start off we find Long Susan and Jackson attempting marital bliss. It's hard from them to walk away, they don't have the finances and I've always felt Long Susan wasn't just doing it for the money, she's still got quite feminist feelings and agendas.

Were you happy with how the stories have gone in season 2?
Matthew Macfadyen: You can see the writers having more fun and taking risks.
MyAnna Buring: Little scenes get written in like us having tea, you can start playing with subtleties.
Adam Rothenberg: The characters discover each other which is new.
You see behaviour and see people starting to inhabit and live together. It's a drama about characters.

rte.ie e second series of Ripper Street, the Victorian crime drama which is filmed in Dublin, begins on BBC One on Monday October 28 at 9:00pm.

The makers of the show, Tiger Aspect, say: "Catching up with the lives and crime-solving of the three heroes of Whitechapel's H Division - Reid (Matthew Macfadyen), Drake (Jerome Flynn) and Jackson (Adam Rothenberg) - is enticing enough, but what too of Long Susan (MyAnna Buring) and Rose (Charlene McKenna)?"

They continue: "Excitingly, a raft of new faces will arrive on Ripper Street, amongst them a new young cop named Flight (Being Human's Damien Molony) and Inspector Jedediah Shine (Joseph Mawle from Game of Thrones).

"Their arrival will add more intrigue over the course of the eight new episodes which start transmitting later this month."

Another new character in the show will be Joseph Merrick (Joseph Drake) - also known as the Elephant Man – who becomes involved in an investigation.

Along with McKenna and Molony, other Irish cast members include Martin McCann, Charlie Murphy and Stanley Townsend.

Who is she playing?
She's not exactly a new character - Edna Braithwaite appeared in the Christmas special - but you weren't expecting to see her again were you? Evil Edna, who almost managed to seduce Branson last time she was at Downton, is making a return to the Abbey in the first episode. Six months have gone past and things have changed. Edna has trained to be a lady's maid. But has she put her scheming ways behind her?

Where do you recognise her from?
The Swedish actress played blood-sucking Tanya in Twilight but she's also appeared in White Heat, The Poison Tree and Ripper Street.

Myanna Buring: New Photoshoot + BD2 Interview with 1883magazine

Photobucket

1883 “I always had this sort of vision in my head that when you auditioned for something that big or wanted to be part of that sort of franchise there would be a real hectic auditioning process…and that just wasn’t the case,” said MyAnna. “It was just sort of a really easy job to get.” Just a few months after meeting with director Bill Condon and author Stephenie Meyer in L.A., MyAnna jet-setted to swampy Louisiana and began her transformation as vampire alongside 17 other new cast members, including Maggie Grace and Lee Pace—two of her “coven siblings” that she grew close to. “I think the fact that there were so many of us, that we were newcomers to the franchise made it feel a little bit less daunting because there were more of us that were new than actors who had been established and who had been a part of the saga.” She also palled around with Meyer off set, a figure whose mega-success would probably intimidate most people, but not MyAnna. “I’d go sit with her and have chats. She’s just the loveliest, most humble, very funny lady.”
After six months of shooting in locations ranging from the lush forests of Vancouver to an abandoned equestrian center filled with green screens and fake snow, filming wrapped and the saga—including MyAnna’s personal one—came to an end. She returned to the UK in time for the release of Part 1, which was a completely new and exciting experience for her. “When it came out, I got this insight into what that whole surface is about, because it is an extraordinarily massive deal for a lot of people,” said MyAnna, a note of genuine awe in her voice. “It’s quite humbling to be somewhere and be surrounded by thousands of people who are so in love with the story that you’ve been a part of.”
