New interview of Jamie Campbell Bower talks stunts, sequels and more

sugarscape If you've been counting down the days until you can watch Jamie Campbell Bower doing his oh-so-sexy thing as Jace Wayland in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones from the comfort of your own sofa then you're in luck - because the DVD is set for release later this month.

Not only that, but we've got our hands on an exclusive interview with JCB, where he talks stunt training, ice-cream and if he'l be filming any sequels. OOH.

You’ve been in several big films, but is this different to anything you've done before?

Yes this is different, I suppose, to anything I’ve done before. This is the male lead in the movie and that carries its own weight.

What was the biggest challenge in making the film?

The physical aspect was hugely challenging for me and the training prior to shooting was very intense and extensive - four months of gym and martial arts. Even when we were shooting, I was still training every day. That was a huge challenge.

Why so much training?

There had to be a physicality to the character, visually, and also in order for me to be able to do all the things that I was doing. We’re talking like three, four hours training a day – which is still a lot. And you know, watching what I was eating, having a nutritionist. I mean, all those kinds of things.

So when you finished, did you dive into the nearest tub of ice cream?

(Laughs) Sometimes I’d find myself jamming my face full of sugar going, ‘What am I doing?’ But I have to say, it actually helped me feel good within myself to have that sort of diet and physicality, so it’s something I’ve continued to do in my life. Not to the same extent, absolutely not. But to an extent where it’s still healthy.

After training for the action sequences, what was it like filming them?

We used very, very little CGI for the stunts and there’s only one instance I can think of where we used wires, so it was pretty hardcore. We were filming in a place called Hamilton, near Toronto, for scenes in the movie that take place in this location called The Hotel Dumort - where a lot of the action takes place. You know, you’re there at 3 o’clock in the morning and all you want to do is go to bed, but you have to jump on a trampoline, do a front flip onto a table and kill four guys in the process (laughs)... It was hard work, but it was also great fun.

What’s next for you - more Mortal Instruments movies?

Obviously, right now, we’re focusing on [film] number one. Would I like to do more of them? Absolutely. Do we have to wait and see how the first one does? Yes. So, you know, that’s where I’m at with these. So, what’s next? Salvation, hopefully at some point, and enlightenment. Who knows…

Constantin to Restart Production on 'Mortal Instruments' Sequel in 2014

THR BERLIN – Constantin is pushing ahead with its adaptations of Cassandra Clare’s best-selling Mortal Instruments franchise and plans to restart production on the second film in the series, The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes, next year.

Constantin slammed the brakes on City of Ashes, which had already begun production, after the first film in the planned franchise, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, underperformed at the box office.

City of Bones, starring Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, opened to $14 million over its first five-day weekend and grossed about $31 million domestically for Sony/Screen Gems. But the film, which was also critically panned, had a reported $60 million budget, with Sony putting up an estimated $60 million more to promote the film's release.

Nevertheless, Martin Moszkowicz, Constantin Film’s head of film and TV, said Clare’s massive fan base has responded positively to the adaptation and that Constantin is determined to continue the franchise.

"The fan response, from the blogosphere and the thousands of mails we have received, has encouraged us to keep going,” Moszkowicz told The Hollywood Reporter. “It's been overwhelmingly positive, in contrast to some other YA titles.”
Moszkowicz said international returns for City of Bones means the first film’s worldwide take is now close to $100 million but admits box-office revenue was below Constantin’s forecasts.

“We are analyzing what we did wrong with the first film -- particularly with the positioning and marketing -- and what changes we have to make. We are working with a great group of people to reposition the franchise [for City of Ashes].”

Moszkowicz suggested one reason for City of Bones’ misfire may have been a marketing campaign that was too narrowly focused on teenage fans, to the detriment of Clare’s 20- and 30-something readers.

“The readers of Mortal Instruments are older than you might think,” he said. “That may have been one issue in our marketing, that we focused too much on a very young audience segment."

What exactly this will mean for City of Bones is unclear. In addition to studying its marketing mistakes, Constantin will be picking through the Harald Zwart-directed feature to see if the script, casting or style needs to be tweaked for City of Ashes. Sigourney Weaver had been attached to join the cast of the Mortal Instruments sequel.

variety Constantin board member Martin Moszkowicz told Variety: ”We are analyzing exactly what went wrong, and that needs some time. We’ll go back to the drawing board, and we’ll work on the screenplay; we’ll work on the elements of the movie; and then we’ll budget it.”

Zwart may return as the helmer of “City of Ashes.” ”We are talking to him and others. At the moment there is no director attached,” Moszkowicz said. ”It also depends on his professional availability of course.”

Moszkowicz said that Constantin “strongly believes” in the franchise, which is adapted from a series of best-selling books for young adults by Cassandra Clare. The books have sold 26 million copies, and Constantin also has the rights to other Clare young adult franchises, including three-book series “Infernal Devices,” and the upcoming five-book series “The Magisterium,” which is co-written with the author of “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” Holly Black. The first book in the “Magisterium” series, “The Iron Trial,” will be published next year.

“We believe strongly in her and the world that she has brought to the readers, but we feel that the movie obviously under-performed. Something was wrong there, and we are trying to make it right the next time,” Moszkowicz said.

Changes to the marketing strategy are in the cards, including the target demo. “Maybe we have targeted too young an audience,” he said. “They are very outspoken, especially in the social media world; they are extremely active. But the readers of the books are from 14 to 34 — that’s the main age group — and maybe some of them had issues with how it was marketed. We need to go behind that, and find out exactly what it was.

“It is an ongoing discussion that we are having, and it is not done. We haven’t made a final decision. But we will only move forward — and we plan to move forward — when we feel we are going to get it right,” Moszkowicz said.

Although the intention is to shoot the film sometime next year, it is not carved in stone.

“That is the plan, but it is not a given,” Moszkowicz said. “We believe in that franchise, and we would like to do that, but we need to get it right.”

Jamie Campbell Bower: New TMI Interview (Mentions Kristen and Twilight)

"I would rather not respond to that question." Hardly saying anything regarding the question: "What was the best and worst part of working with you boyfriend/girlfriend?" interview done together over the phone.

The same life (were a coupe since July 2012 and broke up less than a month ago, together again?) Lilly Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, but refuse to talk about each other. They are Clary Fray and Jace Wayland, faces of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, that has already been released in theaters for two weeks. "Clary seeks to discover her voice in a world between fantasy and reality. It promotes the idea that there is no shame in being an outsider" she says about the film that mixes human angels, werewolves, demons and vampires.

The daughter of Phil Collins ("he said he loved the movie, not his favorite genre but he laughed a lot") likes to sing like her father. But it is not reflected in the scene like Katy Perry, the folk-rockers Mumford & Sons and Bon Iver, Justin Vernon project. Meanwhile, Jamie is a fan of Arcade Fire, Bring Me The Horizon and Florence And The Machine, a band that recruited him for his video, Never Let Me Go. "I've known Florence for eleven years, I saw her for the first time when I first played in The Loops. We met at a party and she said, 'Would you like to make this video? "Of course I accepted even though these shoots exhausted you. There was a journey that lasted almost 24 hours and Florence never complained."

- Did you read the series "Shadow Hunters" before filming?

Lilly: Yes, I was a big fan of the novel before being selected for the cast. I read City of Bones about three years ago and when I found out they were making a movie about it, I called my agent and sent e-mails to see how I could participate.

Jamie: I read the five books recently when I was elected. Cassandre Clare's writing is visceral.

- You were Caius Volturi in "Twilight" and Gellert in "Harry Potter" very dark characters like Jace. Do you feel represented by them?

J : Yes, I always felt attracted to dark characters . I look at Jace as an anti-hero, so I could incorporate these elements. It gives me the opportunity to explore my darker sides , something that I do every day.

- What is the difference find yourself with "Shadow Hunters"?

J : In this movie I do not seek to recreate the iconic image of the vampire or werewolf .

- You studied journalism, what platform attracts you the most? Did you read the reviews about the film?

L : I love TV, I always liked to ask questions, have a voice. For the first time , I did not read any reviews about the film , I make a film for critics , I do not care . I'm not interested how many people go to the movies or say someone sitting behind a computer .

- Which scene was the hardest for you ?

J : - The scene of the greenhouse, the romantic part where Jace Clary opens up. And I interpreted my character so dark that you can understand why it is the hardest. It was like a four-minute monologue, shot in multiple takes and cut for the film. That was a very stressful night .

L : 'I think the emotional aspect, when Valentine and Jace tell me the bad news. As a fan and reader, that was the moment that I caught the history of the book . And I had to show frightened and disturbed to interpret on screen.

- These characters are given a great identity and closeness to his fans outside the cinema ? Do you fear that in the future you'll only be remembered as them the "Shadow Hunters."

L : No, because I think I took challenges and did many different things before this film. I love the character of Clary, but I do not have to define my career. I think that actresses like Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart could also represent different characters .

J : No, I've worked eight years ago in this and every character I did was very different. Soon I will make a car thief in Marseille , then a bio-epic film about a rock band in Los Angeles. I do not much being typecast .
