Update: More Info Filming Dates & Synopsis for 'Equals'

David Garrett’s Mister Smith Entertainment has newly boarded international rights to the stellar Cannes package Equals, set to star Twilight’s Kristen Stewart and Warm Bodies lead Nicholas Hoult.

Breathe In and Like Crazy director Drake Doremus will direct screenwriter Nathan Parker’s (Moon) futuristic love story set in a society where emotions have been eradicated. Stewart and Hoult will play the film’s young couple rebelling against their society.

Producers are Ridley Scott, Michael Schaefer, Ann Ruark, and Jay Stern and Chip Diggins of Route One, who are also financing. Executive producers are Mike Pruss, Lee Jea Woo, Choi Pyung Ho and Russell Levine.

UTA Independent Film Group arranged financing for the project – which was previously with Exclusive Media - and will sell the North American rights to the film, which is due to start in Japan and Singapore in August 2014.

German electro musician Apparat - well known for track Goodbye, which featured in the climactic scene of the season 4 finale of Breaking Bad - will provide the music, production design will come from Tino Schaedler (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), and costume design will be by Michael Wilkenson (American Hustle).

Equals tells the story of Silas (Hoult) who lives in a future society called The Collective. The inhabitants of this modern world are a new breed of humans called Equals. Equals are peaceful, calm, fair, and polite and life in The Collective is perfect; there is no greed, no poverty, no violence, and no emotion. But a new disease is threatening everyone: SOS, or Switched-On-Syndrome, is activating in its victims everything they thought they’d escaped: depression, sensitivity, fear, love but once a person is overtaken with SOS, they are sent away to The Den, and never seen again.

When Silas is infected, he becomes an outcast, but he notices one person who seems to understand what he’s going through. Nia (Stewart) has feelings, but she seems to be able to hide them. When he confronts her, they discover a connection that quickly takes over everything. They feel love and intimacy for the first time in their lives but the only way for them to insure their survival is to escape.

Combining two of the industry’s hottest sales names and a stellar production team, Equals is likely to be among the most in-demand titles at the Cannes marché.

indiewire  (..) Did this film have to be scripted more because there are effects and things you need to work out technically?
A little bit, but it’s more that I wanted to work out something totally different. I did a web series for Toshiba last year, called “The Beauty Inside,” that was really fun to do. And it was from a script—it was more of a hybrid; I improvised a good amount, so it was a little bit of both—and I really kind of fell in love with that. So I want to change the process a little bit, and work from a script, work from a blueprint that actually works, and that I love, and then kind of organically find the scenes as we go. But it’s nice to have something on paper.

I’m working with a whole different crew, a whole different cast—it’s fun to explore and see what comes out of it.

Were you itching to make a bigger scale movie?
Absolutely.

So what will it be like? Can you tell us about the new movie?
Yeah, I mean, it’s just a bigger movie. It’s kind of hard to explain. It's still very intimate, and still very performance-based, but at the same time, it's a broader concept, and it's a much bigger idea.

Can you tell us what the story is?
I haven't really talked about it yet. I'm not really as articulate yet on it; I'm not there yet. Sorry!

Hey, that’s okay. What can you tell us about your cast?
It's Kristen Stewart and Nick Hoult, and they are fantastic. I think people are going to see a very different side of them than they've seen before. We're just going to get in and try to make something really unique and really special. We're shooting later this year.

DOREMUS: Sure. It's called Equals and we start shooting later this year. It's a script, like I said, written by a really talented writer named Nathan Parker, who wrote Moon (2009). It's an idea that I had that we've been collaborating on for the past year and a half. It's a different genre, but it's still a love story and still in the vein of what I'm interested in doing.

DD: Well, it’s not so much sci-fi as it is futuristic. It’s not really about the technological elements so much as it’s about a world where love does not exist anymore and human interaction is totally different and has been changed. I mean, it’s totally different, it’s written by Nathan Parker, who wrote Moon, and purposely I’m working with a whole different team of people and I want to do something totally different than I’ve ever done before to stretch myself and to try something totally different. Consciously, it’s very different than Like Crazy and Breathe In.

DD: Yeah, yeah, yeah!

 [Laughs] It’s really not like that, but I’m sure you hear comparisons about things. At the end of the day, the movie to me is hopefully a very unique departure from most futuristic love stories that anyone’s ever seen in the past.


Most, I don’t think there’ve been a lot of futuristic love stories.

That’s true. Good. We’re already starting there then. I like it.

DOREMUS:  Yeah.  It’s funny, the fact that that’s out there is a little odd because it’s not really a sci-fi film, per se.  It’s a futuristic journey.  But yeah, I’m going to start shooting that later this year.  It’s just hard to define it because it really is something totally unique.  It’s written by Nathan Parker, who wrote Moon, and we’ve been developing the idea for about a year and a half.  It’s a script this time, so it’s totally different from anything I’ve done before, which is exciting.  It will be a little bit scary, but also really exciting to try something totally new.

And you have a cast in place already?
DOREMUS:  Yeah, it’s going to be Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart.
Had you ever thought about working with Felicity Jones again on this?
DOREMUS:  No, this was never a project that Felicity and I were going to collaborate on.  Obviously, we want to work together again on the right thing.  But from the start, I really wanted to work with a brand new team on this, to try to challenge myself to see things a little bit differently, and I love everybody that I’ve been working with.  It’s an exciting opportunity to try something different.

Are you hoping to keep working in the more fluid, less scripted style in the future, or do you think you’re moving more into scripted work?
DOREMUS:  I think it just depends on the story and what the story calls for.  Some narratives call for a much looser, more improvised style, and some call for a much more structured style.  I think it’s just a movie by movie basis.

"Equals"is set to head to Berlin‘s European Film

Deadine The Drake Doremus-directed sci-fi pic Equals that we told you in the fall would star Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult is shaping up, and with financing in hand is now set to head to Berlin‘s European Film Market next month as a prime sales target.
Scott Free has come aboard with Indian Paintbrush to back the film, and Exclusive Media will sell foreign rights at EFM. Nathan Parker (Moon) penned the script, and Doremus was talking up the project when he was doing press for his last pic Breathe In. Steven Rales’ producer/financier Indian Paintbrush has had a relationship with Doremus since his Like Crazy. Stay tuned.

Kristen Stewart ‘Terrified’ To Film Equals

AH LOS ANGELES, CALIF. Kristen Stewart has signed on to play the lead in “Like Crazy” director Drake Doremus’ futuristic love story “Equals,” and it’s making her a nervous wreck.

“I can’t believe I agreed to do it,” said the “Twilight” actress about her upcoming role in the sci-fi drama, which also stars Nicholas Hoult of the upcoming “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”

Stewart describes “Equals” as a slightly updated version of the 1956 film “1984,” based on George Orwell’s classic 1949 novel about rebellion in a repressed futuristic society. “Equals” begins filming later this year.

“I’m terrified of it,” said the 23-year-old actress in a recent interview. “Though it’s a movie with a really basic concept, it’s overtly ambitious.”

“In ‘Equals,’ things go wrong because you can’t deny the humanity in everyone,” said Stewart. “It’s the most devastating story.”

Adds Doremus of his sixth film: “It’s about love in a world where love really doesn’t exist anymore.”

Written by Nathan Parker (“Moon”), “Equals” is the first film Doremus will direct that he didn’t write himself.

“I trust Drake’s process and I know we will do something really natural and real,” said Stewart. “But I told Drake, ‘Don’t expect that I am going to be able to do this. It’s too hard.’ But he wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. I’ve given directors disclaimers before, but never this much.”

Jennifer Lawrence, who appeared in 2011’s “Like Crazy,” was one of the first actresses to read Parker’s script. Though the story brought her to tears, she couldn’t see herself in the role, said Doremus.

“It became evident in my head that Nick and Kristen would have great chemistry,” the director said.

“It’s a love story of epic, epic, epic proportion,” added Stewart. “I’m scared.”

This week, the actress heads to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, where she’ll star in writer-director Peter Sattler’s soldier film “Camp X-Ray.”

I definitely want to maintain the elements of the intimacy while doing something bigger and different. My next movie is going to be a sci-fi, love story written by Nathan Parker, writer of Moon. An incredible collaborator, we’ve been working together for almost a year now and hopefully we’ll be making the movie sooner than later

Will the new sci-fi movie be a huge, Prometheus-epic type film?

Not bigger than that. It’s not going to be out of hand, but I think it’s a logical next step, if that makes any sense without giving too much away of the budget realm.

Will there be some type of special effects element involved?

Definitely.

Are you excited to be working on the new film?

Very much so. If it’s not scary or if it’s different, you should do it. I’m really excited to explore a whole new thing while bringing my own passions to it and that’s what’s exciting about collaborating with someone who’s doing something totally different to you as together you can create something very original and unique by bringing different elements to the table.

Are there any genres off limits to you?

Absolutely not! I’m just getting started…
